London, 1888. Whitechapel at night.

A green smog has rolled in off the Thames, and the people breathing it are not people any more. Inspector Silas Crane of Scotland Yard walks a gaslit crossroads to find out why. The trail leads to the Order of the Black Lung and the machine they have built in the old gasworks.

How to play

  • Investigate: find the three pieces of evidence (a letter, a vial and a ledger) hidden around the district. Each one is a clue to the Order's plan.
  • Survive the smog: breathing it hurts. Stand within the glow of a gas lamp to be safe, or keep your lantern lit. The lantern burns oil, and oil cans are scattered around the streets.
  • Fight the Choked: strike with your silver-tipped cane, or fire a lantern flare to stagger every enemy nearby and push the smog back for a moment.
  • Stop the Engine: with the evidence in hand the gasworks gate opens. Get past the Black Lung cultists and their censers, close the three valves, and overload the Miasma Engine to clear the air over London.

Look and sound

  • Streets: rain-slick cobblestones and sooty brick with parallax occlusion mapping. Rain stands in the joints between the stones and puddles rise over them.
  • Sky and light: a drifting smog cloud layer lit amber from below by the city's gaslight, a veiled moon low over the gasworks, and volumetric fog.
  • Weather: falling rain, splashes on the setts, and coal smoke from the chimneys.
  • Grade: a film-style colour grade in amber gaslight and absinthe green.
  • Sound: a brooding Victorian horror score with rain, wind and engine ambience.
