What it does

Staging

The moments First Light: Sabaean Madcaps takes the camera off the player, and the narrator who speaks over them. Mounted once, on mount_staging.

It places nothing in the world and owns no camera. It asks game.staging.beats for a shot, hands it to game.staging.stage, and ChaseCam — the behaviour on the player's own rig — draws it. The two ends of the camera never call each other, which is why a moment still runs on the frame the player's rig is being rebuilt.

The four moments

beatWhat it does
openinga crane from the dark altar at the summit, back and down the temple's face, settling behind the runner at the start line — the two narrator lines run under it
firstLightthe whole temple in silhouette with the eastern ridge behind it, held while the sun's rim clears the peaks
altarthe summit — the won orbit or the lost reveal, chosen by the altar signal that came with it
lostthe summit, lost, stated explicitly

Each emits beatDone under the same name it was asked with, so the rules slice can hold the runner's input until the moment is over. A moment nothing asks for after an altar signal is staged anyway, after altarFallback seconds; that wait disarms the instant a beat arrives.

It also answers shoved with a kick in the camera and dash with the lens opening, and drops whatever is running when the phase returns to title.

The narrator

Voiced, and subtitled. Every line sets MC.state.subtitle and rides on the say payload with its .soundClip attached, so the screens slice draws the written form and the sound slice plays it against the mix. When no sound slice is mounted this component plays the clip itself rather than letting the narration go silent. A line whose clip is missing still plays as text, and the missing clips are named in the log and in status().

Clips live in game/staging/voice/: open_1 open_2 firstlight won lost.

Methods

  • playBeat(name) — stage one moment exactly as the rules slice would ask.
  • status() — the beat in flight, its progress, the shot being drawn, the voice lengths read off the clips, and any clip that failed to generate.
  • abort() — drop the moment and give the camera back, without beatDone.

Staging — the moments FIRST LIGHT: SABAEAN MADCAPS takes the camera off the player, and the voice that speaks over them. Mounted once, on `mount_staging`, by the scene's entrypoint. It places nothing in the world and owns no camera: it asks `game.staging.beats` for a shot, hands it to `game.staging.stage`, and `ChaseCam` — the behaviour on the player's own rig — draws it. The two ends of the camera never call each other, which is why a beat still runs on the frame the player's rig is being rebuilt. What it answers to on the bus: beat "opening" the crane down the temple, two narrator lines beat "firstLight" the hold east on the ridge beat "altar" the summit — won or lost, decided by the `altar` signal beat "lost" the summit, lost, stated explicitly shoved a kick in the camera dash the lens opens and eases shut phase a return to `title` drops whatever was running and it emits `beatDone(name)` under the SAME name it was asked with, so the rules slice can hold the runner's input until the moment is over. The narrator is voiced. Every line ships with its written form as well — `MC.say` puts it on screen through the screens slice — so a line survives a failed generation, a muted player and a noisy room. When the sound slice is mounted the line's clip rides on the `say` payload and the sound slice plays it against its own mix; when it is not, this component plays the clip itself rather than letting the narration go silent.

Audio

loadClips( ) → void

Asset identities have to be literals so the world can pin what it ships.

soundSliceMounted( ) → boolean

Does the sound slice own playback of spoken lines this session?

voiceSource( ) → any

speak(line: Beats.Line) → void

Speak one line: the written form onto the screen through MC, the clip onto the `say` payload for the sound slice, and — only when nothing else owns playback — out of this component's own source.

runnerPos( ) → Stage

Read the subject off the camera's own follow slot rather than caching a body: entity ids are per-session and the player's body is replaced when the runner slice's avatar arrives, so a cached id goes stale exactly once and silently.

# beats ```lua local Beats = require("game.staging.beats") ``` The four staged moments of *First Light: Sabaean Madcaps*, each built as a `stage.Shot`: a duration, a function that frames the camera at any point `0..1` through it, and the narrator lines cued against the same clock. `Staging.component` asks for one and hands it to `Stage.play`; nothing here touches the camera itself, which is what lets a beat's whole arc be sampled and looked at without running it. - `Beats.opening(runnerPos?, onDone?)` — the crane from the dark altar at the summit, back and down the temple's face, settling behind the runner at the start line. Its last leg lands on the follow pose it is handed, so the hand-off into play has no step in it. - `Beats.firstLight(_, onDone?)` — the temple in silhouette with the eastern ridge behind it and the sky above. The station is read from the **temple**, not the runner: anchored to the runner it stood behind the mass on the western faces, which puts the temple between the camera and the sunrise the beat exists to show. - `Beats.won(onDone?)` — the flame catches and the camera swings round the altar to the west, so the new fire stands against the sunrise. - `Beats.lost(runnerPos?, onDone?)` — Wahab'il's hand on the bowl, close; then back and up **along the face the runner is actually climbing**, until the madcap is small on the terraces below. `Beats.LINES` is the narrator's script — clip name, cue second, written text and a fallback length. `Beats.DURATION` is how long each moment takes. Every geometry number is read from `game.madcaps` — the altar, the terraces, the start line — so a change to the temple's proportions moves the beats with it rather than leaving them framing air.

# stage ```lua local Stage = require("game.staging.stage") ``` The one surface through which anything moves the camera of *First Light: Sabaean Madcaps*. `ChaseCam` is the only thing that writes a pose onto the camera entity; everything else states its intent here and ChaseCam reads it on the frame it poses. ## Intents - `Stage.play(shot)` — a scripted move owns the camera for `shot.dur` seconds. ChaseCam draws `shot.frame(u, follow)` every frame and skips the follow. `follow` is the pose the gameplay camera *would* take, so a move can land exactly on it and hand over with no step in the picture. `shot.onDone` fires on the frame it ends. - `Stage.kick(metres, seconds?)` — an impulse that shakes whatever pose is being drawn and decays away. - `Stage.widen(degrees, seconds?)` — the lens opens and eases back. `Stage.staged()`, `Stage.stagedName()`, `Stage.progress()` and `Stage.cancel()` read and drop what is running. `Stage.advance(dt, follow)` is the per-frame read, called by ChaseCam and by nothing else. ## Framing `Stage.aspect()` is the live viewport's width / height. `Stage.solveDistance(fovDeg, frameW, frameH, aspect?)` answers the distance at which `frameW` metres fit **across** the frame and `frameH` metres fit **up** it — the larger of the two solutions, so neither axis can crop. This is what makes the same shot read on a phone held either way, a laptop and a television. ## Interpolation `smooth` `easeIn` `easeOut` `lerp` `lerpVec` `path` `vec` `clamp01`. `Stage.path(keys, u)` walks a list of key positions as one continuous move, each leg eased so the camera settles at every key rather than cornering through it.
