What it does

Mixer

Everything GREASEPAINT sounds like. Mounted once on the scene's Sound anchor: it stands the mix up (game.audio.bus) and holds the levels the whole night is balanced at. No sibling components are required — it spawns its own sources under the anchor and tears them down again.

Public fields

  • masterVolume: number — 0..1, the level the whole mix is heard at.
  • musicVolume: number — 0..1, the calliope bed, before ducking.
  • ambienceVolume: number — 0..1, the tent: canvas, wind, the rope — and the house drone that rises with the heat.
  • sfxVolume: number — 0..1, the gags, the blows and the table.
  • voiceVolume: number — 0..1, the spoken lines.

Probes

Three methods read the mix without listening to it. Every check the sound slice makes is made of them.

  • :observe() — what the mix is doing right now: which sources are sounding and whySilent() for any that are not, the master meter (peak, rms), whether a line is being spoken, how many listeners the bus holds, how warm the house is (heat), where the drone sits (drone.gain / .target / .running), and recent — the last twelve one-shots the bus actually started, each with its clip name and the bus clock it started at. recent is how you tell "the event was heard" from "something else was loud".
  • :cue(name, opts) — play one clip from game.audio.library by name. opts.where is "ring" (out in the spotlight) or "ui" (at the seat). Answers false when the clip is missing, re-triggered inside 60 ms, or over the one-shot budget.
  • :say(id) — speak one line from game.audio.Lines and print it as a subtitle. Answers whether a reading was there; the words are emitted either way.

Lifecycle

  • start() — installs the bus on this entity and pushes the levels.
  • update(dt) / editorUpdate(dt) — advances the mix: the duck under a spoken line releasing, and the house drone moving toward the heat.
  • onPropertyChanged() — pushes the levels again.
  • onDestroy() — uninstalls the bus, dropping every listener and source.

Usage

local mixer = entity.find("Sound").component.get("Mixer")
mixer:observe() -- what is sounding, and how warm the house is
mixer:cue("tent_laugh_3") -- the whole house, once
mixer:say("marrow_heat2") -- spoken, subtitled, ducked

game.audio.Mixer — everything GREASEPAINT sounds like. Mounted once on the scene's `Sound` anchor. It stands the mix up (`game.audio.bus`) and holds the levels the whole night is balanced at: the calliope bed and the tent ambience underneath, the house drone that comes up a step with every tent laugh, the ring out in the spotlight carrying the gags and the blows, the table and the menus at the seat, and the company's voices over all of it. Clips live under game/audio/clips, lines under game/audio/voice; both are baked by game/audio/bake.luau. The bus answers every Core event and emits `voice.line { speaker, text, durationMs }` for the screens slice to print. Three probes read the mix without listening to it, and every check in the sound slice is made of them: `Mixer:observe()` what is sounding, why anything is not, the meter, how warm the house is and where the drone sits `Mixer:cue(name)` play one library clip by name, "ring" or "ui" `Mixer:say(id)` speak one line from game.audio.Lines, subtitle and all

# audio.bus The mix. Six sources under the scene's `Sound` anchor: | source | what it carries | |---|---| | `sound_bed` | the calliope, looping, on the `music` channel | | `sound_ambience` | the tent, looping, on `ambient` | | `sound_heat` | the house drone, looping, on `ambient` — silent until the tent first laughs | | `sound_ring` | spatial, out at the clown: the gags, the blows, the act | | `sound_table` | the cards, the readouts and the menus, at the seat | | `sound_voice` | whoever is speaking, ducking the beds under themselves | It subscribes to `Core.on` and answers every event the run emits, and to the `cmd.*` commands as well, so a menu press is heard whether or not the run is in a state that acts on it. Every subscription carries the tag `audio.bus`, so a hot reload of the Mixer replaces the listeners it left rather than stacking a second copy beside them. Two gates keep the mix under full scale: a clip re-triggered inside 60 ms is dropped, and the bus spends a budget of eight starts a second across every clip. A cue that loses to either answers `false`. ## The heat The house counts how many times it has laughed tonight, and the count is a different sound each time. - `tent.laughs` and `tent.heat` both ask for the laugh, one frame apart or alone. The bus takes the loudest level named across a couple of frames and laughs ONCE, at that level: `tent_laugh`, then `tent_laugh_2` (lower and wider), then `tent_laugh_3` (every seat). - `tent.heat { level }` also steps the drone (0.30 → 0.58 → 0.90), lights a lamp on the meter half a second later, and hands Mr. Marrow the line for that level. - `run.start` cools the house: the drone falls away and stops outright, so a title screen is the two beds and nothing else. How warm the house is lives beside the teardown list on `Core._audio`, not in a module local — a hot reload in the middle of a night must not put the tent back to the start of the evening. `Bus.observe()` reports what is sounding, why anything is not, the heat, the drone, and the last twelve one-shots the bus started.
