What it does

Staging

The moments of First Light: Vagant — the beats where the game takes the camera off the player, and the voice of the whole script.

Mounted once, on mount_staging. It places nothing in the scene and owns no entity; it listens to the game and answers with a shot.

The beats

BeatWhat starts itWhat it is
openingthe round beginsThe fen, low over the water, then the first dark standard, then the vagant at the sluice house. The Commissioner is heard before anything is seen.
sevenththe last lamp catchesOff the lamp head and up, until all seven lights are in one frame.
firstLightthe night is wonThe crane up off the vagant, out to the dawn, and out into the light.
caughta Commissioner reaches youThe camera falls to the ground and the wig fills the frame while your entry is read.
dawnLostfirst light, lamps still darkThe same rise, over a fen that never came on.

A night ends one way: a named ending — caught, or first light — displaces the dark-fen one, even mid-shot.

Skipping

Every beat is skippable, from a keyboard (Space, Esc, Enter), from a pad (south, east, start), from a thumb (the Skip button, bottom right) and from a mouse (the SKIP pill, top right). staging.inputMap carries that one control and stands the player group down while a beat runs, so the gameplay controls leave the screen along with the gameplay camera and come back with it.

A skipped beat keeps its consequences and drops its remaining lines: what has not been said yet is not said over the game you have just been handed back.

Every shape of screen

No shot in here is a fixed camera position. Each is a direction and a distance from what the shot is about, resolved against the live ui.screenSize():

  • a laterally wide subject — the fen, the line of seven lights — needs more room across than a tall frame has, so a tall frame stands back;
  • a tall subject — the vagant, a Commissioner filling the frame — is the other way round, and a tall frame comes closer;
  • the seven-lamp vista is fitted rather than placed: flbeats.fitEye solves the distance at which the whole fen fits the narrower of the frame's two half angles, which is the horizontal one on a phone held upright and the vertical one on a television.

The voice

Staging decides when a line happens and emits say(key); the sound of it belongs to SoundDirector, and the words on screen belong to Screens. Every key staging fires is in staging.flscript, with its written form beside it — so a line whose audio never arrives is a quiet line rather than a lost one.

Beyond the beats, staging speaks over live gameplay without taking the camera: the first relit lamp, the fourth, the sixth, the first time something notices you, the wig going on, the wig soaking through, and the oil running short.

Public

  • playBeat(name) — play one now, whether or not it has already played.
  • skip() — skip whatever is running.

Signals it raises

  • stagingBeat(name) — a beat began.
  • stagingDone(name, reason) — it ended: completed, skipped or stopped.

Reading the world without assuming another slice has built its part yet

argtypedescription

liveEntity(ref: any) → void

A shot anchor for an entity that is still in the scene, plus where it stands. A shot whose anchor names an entity that has gone is refused outright, so every anchor is checked before it reaches a shot. The anchor is the entity's ID, not the proxy: a cutscene resolves a name or an id, and hands a proxy to the position reader, which indexes it as a list and raises `no property/method '1'` (filed). An id tracks the same entity per frame and takes the documented path.

queueBeat(name: BeatName) → void

A night ends ONE way, and the two things that report an ending — the loop's `lost` phase and the jaseys' `caught` — arrive in either order and sometimes both. `dawnLost` is what staging plays when nothing said HOW the night ended, so a named ending displaces it, even mid-shot; a named ending is never displaced by anything.

argtypedescription
nameBeatName

playBeat(name: string) → void

Play one now, whatever has already played and whichever ending the night reached. It goes straight onto the queue rather than through `queueBeat`, so neither the once-a-round guard nor the one-ending rule refuses it.

subscribe( ) → void

checkBus( ) → void

`fl` keeps its subscriptions in a module-level local, so a hot reload of `fl.module` — which the loop slice edits all through a session — starts that table empty and every slice's handlers are gone with it, silently. Staging asks once a second whether the bus still holds its own handler, and takes its subscriptions back when it does not.

# fl One-paragraph description of what this module provides and who consumes it. ## Exports - `M.exampleFn(arg) -> result` — what it does and when to call it. - `M.exampleValue: type` — what value it carries. ## Usage Replace `<identity>` with the string `asset.create` returned — this module's source path with `/` written as `.` and each segment's type suffix dropped, the way a module at `/source/lib/thing.module` is `lib.thing` and one at `/source/kit.package/thing.module` is `kit.thing`. ```luau local M = require("<identity>") M.exampleFn("foo") ``` ## Notes - Anything callers need to know about THIS module: required runtime ordering, state ownership, side effects.

# flbeats The staged moments of *First Light: Vagant*, as cutscene definitions. `require("staging.flbeats")`. Each builder takes the context a beat is played in — where the vagant stands, which Commissioner reached him, which lamp caught — and a function to fire a spoken line with, and returns the table `cutscene.play` takes. Nothing here plays anything. ```luau local beats = require("staging.flbeats") cutscene.play(beats.seventh(ctx, function(key) fl.emit("say", key) end)) ``` | Builder | The shot | |---|---| | `opening(ctx, fire)` | Low over the water, onto the first dark standard, then in behind the vagant. | | `seventh(ctx, fire)` | Off the lamp head and up to the vista, where all seven lights sit in one frame. | | `firstLight(ctx, fire)` | The crane up off the vagant to the dawn, fading out into the light. | | `caught(ctx, fire)` | The drop to the ground and the push in until the wig fills the frame. | | `dawnLost(ctx, fire)` | The same rise as first light, over a fen that stayed dark. | ## Framing No eye position in this module is a number chosen for one screen. - `aspect()` reads the live screen. - `pullWide(a)` / `pullTall(a)` scale an authored offset: a laterally wide subject moves the camera back in a tall frame, a tall subject brings it closer. - `fitEye(centre, radius, elevation, vfov, margin)` solves the distance a subject of that radius fits at, against the **narrower** of the frame's two half angles — the horizontal one on a phone held upright, the vertical one on a television. That is what puts all seven lamps in shot at 3:4 and at 21:9 without two versions of the shot. `FEN_CENTRE`, `FEN_RADIUS` and `DAWN_POINT` are the three places the wide shots are about.

# staging.inputMap The scheme that is live only while a staged moment is playing. One control — **Skip** — carrying all three device classes: | Class | Bound to | |---|---| | keyboard / mouse | `Space`, `Escape`, `Enter` | | gamepad | `south`, `east`, `start` | | touch | a large button, bottom right, first in the layout | The map's group is `staging` and it suppresses `player`, so for as long as a beat runs the gameplay controls stand down and their on-screen buttons leave the overlay along with the gameplay camera. Both come back the moment the beat ends, however it ended.

# flscript Staging's view of the spoken script of *First Light: Vagant*: the keys it fires, the written form of each line, and roughly how long each one takes to say. ```luau local script = require("staging.flscript") script.lines["open_comm_1"] --> { text = ..., speaker = ..., dur = ... } script.dur("lose_1") --> seconds to leave for it ``` The text comes from `audio.voice` when that module is present, so what is on the screen is what was recorded. The copies in this file are the fallback, and they are the same lines: a line whose audio never arrives is still a line the game says, in writing. `script.order` lists every key in the order a full round would hear them. Two speakers: **THE COMMISSIONER**, who reads from a minute-book, and **THE VAGANT**, who does not.

# skip Skip the staged moment that is playing. Live only while a beat runs. The touch button is generated from this record, so a phone gets a real **Skip** control without staging drawing one; the mouse has the **SKIP** pill in the corner as well. | Class | Bound to | |---|---| | keyboard / mouse | `Space`, `Escape`, `Enter` | | gamepad | `south`, `east`, `start` | | touch | a large button in the lower-right cluster, `priority = 1` |
