censer — the smoke, and the charcoal that pays for it

The brass censer swings on its chain and lays a column of burning aromatics in front of the physician. The smoke rises, and so does anything standing in it: step into your own column and it carries you up a wall that has no handholds on it. It is the reason a plague doctor's instrument list is also his route.

Every swing burns charcoal. When the censer is cold it swings anyway and does nothing, and the only way to fill it again is to stand at a lit brazier.

The smoke is censerSmoke.shader beside this file — one quad per puff and no texture at all. The billow, its churn, the coal glowing out of its middle while it is young, and the way it swells and thins as it dies are all computed in the fragment shader from two numbers: how old the puff is, and a seed that keeps it from looking like the puff next to it.

Also here: the dust a heavy landing throws up, which is the same cloud with the fire taken out of it and told not to lift anybody.

game.censer — the brass censer: burning aromatics, a column of smoke, and the charcoal that pays for it. Part of the TRAVERSE slice. A swing lays a stack of puffs in front of the doctor and slightly above him. The smoke RISES, and anything standing inside it rises with it — including the doctor, which is what turns an instrument of medicine into a way up a wall with no handholds. It costs charcoal (`NB.state.charcoal`), and charcoal comes back only at a brazier. WHAT OTHER SLICES READ NB.ext.smokeAt(x, y) -> boolean is that world point inside live smoke? The rounds slice asks this to know which infected should be recoiling. NB.ext.censer.puffs the live puff list, read-only WHAT IT LISTENS FOR "brazier" { x, y } the doctor is at a lit brazier; charcoal refills for as long as the pulses keep arriving, so it works whether the city emits it once or every frame. WHAT IT EMITS "puff" { x, y } a swing landed The visual is `censerSmoke.shader` beside this file: one quad per puff, no texture, the whole billow and its dissipation computed in the fragment shader from `age` and `seed`. Each live puff holds its own RUNTIME material (`renderer.material.create`, which needs no VFS write and so works in play mode) drawn from a fixed pool, so the smoke costs a handful of draw calls and nothing else.

Live state Kept on NB.ext, not in a module local: a hot-reload re-runs this chunk and a local would come back empty while the quads it owned were still in the world.

The instrument itself. Returns true when the swing happened, false when there was no charcoal left for it — the caller turns that into the sound and the animation, so an empty censer still reads as an attempt.

descriptionThe plague doctor's censer: a swing lays a column of burning smoke that rises, carries anything standing in it, and wards the infected. Costs charcoal, refilled at braziers. Draws the billow with a procedural, textureless shader.
