What it does

synth

The sound of FURROW, computed rather than recorded.

synth is a small offline DSP kit: it fills a track — two mono f32 buffers, one per channel — with tones, noise and events, and hands back the interleaved PCM that asset.create("soundClip", …) bakes into a clip. Nothing in it touches an entity, the mixer, or the network, so a score built on it is the same score on every machine and cannot fail for a credit or a connection.

The rule everything is shaped by

A bed that loops must be seamless end to end. Loop points are accepted by the clip format and read by no playback surface, so the only loop this engine plays is a whole clip repeated — and a whole clip repeated clicks once a lap unless its last sample runs into its first.

Three mechanisms hold that:

  • snap(track, hz) returns the nearest frequency that fits a whole number of cycles into the track. Every periodic generator runs its frequencies and its LFO rates through it, so a tone arrives back at its starting phase.
  • noiseBuf filters its ring circularly — the one-pole filters are primed with a full lap before anything is kept, so the filter state at sample 0 is the state at sample n.
  • hit, burst and glide write with wraparound, so an event near the end of a loop spills into its head instead of being cut off. Each also opens on a short ramp rather than a step, because a strike landing on sample 0 is exactly the discontinuity the loop point would carry.

seam(track) is how you check: it returns the amplitude step across the loop point beside the mean step between adjacent samples. A ratio near 1 means the loop point is indistinguishable from every other sample boundary in the clip. bake_score.luau prints it for every bed it writes.

Shape of a bake

local synth = require("furrow.synth")

local tr = synth.newTrack(8)                     -- 8 seconds, stereo, 44100
synth.addSine(tr, { freq = 55, amp = 0.2, amRate = 0.25, amDepth = 0.5 })
synth.addNoise(tr, { seed = 7, lo = 140, hi = 2400, amp = 0.3, pan = -0.8,
                     gustRate = 0.125, gustDepth = 0.7 })
synth.hit(tr, { at = 0.25, freq = 118, endFreq = 31, decay = 0.6 })
synth.normalize(tr, 0.7)
print(select(2, synth.seam(tr)))                 -- want this near 1
asset.create("soundClip", "bed", { pcm = synth.interleave(tr),
                                   sampleRate = synth.RATE, channels = 2 })

Call fadeEdges on a one-shot so it starts and ends at exact zero. Never call it on a looping bed — that is what would put the click in.

softclip is the only dynamics processing available anywhere: the engine exposes no compressor, limiter, EQ or reverb to Luau, so anything that has to survive a full-mass climax is glued here, in the samples, before it is encoded.

FURROW — the synthesiser. Every sound in this film is computed here, sample by sample, as raw interleaved f32 PCM. Nothing is downloaded and no service is called: the score is arithmetic, so it is the same score on every machine and on every run, and it cannot fail for a credit or a network reason. THE ONE RULE THAT SHAPES ALL OF IT: a bed that loops must be seamless END TO END. The only loop this engine plays is a whole clip repeated, so a clip whose last sample does not run into its first clicks once per lap. Everything here is built to wrap: * `snap` puts a WHOLE number of cycles into the track, so a tone comes back to its starting phase at the loop point. * `noiseBuf` filters CIRCULARLY — the filter is primed with a full lap around the ring before anything is kept, so its state at sample 0 is its state at sample n. * `hit` and `burst` write with WRAPAROUND, so an event near the end spills into the head rather than being cut off. A track is two mono f32 `buffer`s, one per channel, interleaved only at the end. A buffer is the cheap container: a 12-second stereo bed is 1.06 M samples, which is 4.2 MB of buffer against a 1.06 M-entry Luau table.

rng(seed: number) → void

Determinism A minimal-standard LCG. Same seed, same samples, every run on every host — which is what lets the score be re-baked and still be the same score.

seednumber

newTrack(dur: number, rate: number?) → Track

Tracks A silent stereo track `dur` seconds long. The stored `dur` is the track's EXACT length in whole samples, which is what `snap` measures against.

argtypedescription
durnumber
ratenumber?

snap(track: Track, hz: number) → number

The nearest frequency to `hz` that fits a whole number of cycles into the track. Every periodic generator runs through this; it is the difference between a bed that loops and a bed that ticks.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
hznumber

pan(p: number) → void

Equal-power pan. -1 hard left, 0 centre, 1 hard right.

argtypedescription
pnumber

addSine(track: Track, o: { [string]: any }) → void

Periodic generators — these WRAP A sine partial, optionally tremoloed by a slow snapped LFO. `freq` and `amRate` are both snapped, so the whole layer wraps.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
o{ [string]: any }

addSaw(track: Track, o: { [string]: any }) → void

A naive sawtooth — bright and a little dirty, which is what a mass of them detuned against each other should sound like. Snapped, so it wraps.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
o{ [string]: any }

noiseBuf(track: Track, seed: number, lo: number?, hi: number?) → buffer

A ring of band-passed noise, normalised to RMS 1. Filtered circularly, so looping the ring produces no seam. Returned as its own buffer so several layers can share one ring at different gains and pans.

lonumber?
hinumber?

addNoise(track: Track, o: { [string]: any }) → void

Mix a noise ring into the track, gusting on up to two snapped LFOs. Pass different `seed`s to L and R for width; the same seed centres it.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
o{ [string]: any }

hit(track: Track, o: { [string]: any }) → void

Events — these WRAP too, so a hit late in a loop spills into its head A percussive strike: a sine falling from `freq` to `endFreq` under an exponential decay, with a noise transient on the front. This is the thud under the score's pulse, the mast hitting the crust, and — scaled up by an order of magnitude in length — the animal entering the ground.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
o{ [string]: any }

burst(track: Track, o: { [string]: any }) → void

A noise swell: `dur` seconds of band-passed noise rising over `attack` and falling away after. The sand's whole vocabulary is made of these — a curtain pouring, a plume standing up, a wall arriving.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
o{ [string]: any }

peak(track: Track) → number

Finishing The track's absolute peak across both channels.

argtypedescription
trackTrack

normalize(track: Track, target: number) → void

Scale the track so its peak sits at `target`.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
targetnumber

softclip(track: Track, drive: number) → void

A tanh-ish saturator. There is no compressor or limiter anywhere in this engine — the whole DSP-effect surface is one open feature request — so a score that has to survive a full-mass climax is glued here, in the samples, before it is ever encoded.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
drivenumber

fadeEdges(track: Track, headSec: number, tailSec: number) → void

Fade the very edges of a ONE-SHOT so it starts and ends at exact zero. Never call this on a looping bed — it is what would put the click in.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
headSecnumber
tailSecnumber

seam(track: Track) → void

Whether a bed actually loops, as a number. Returns the amplitude step ACROSS the loop point beside the mean step between any two adjacent samples in the clip. A tone or an envelope that fails to wrap makes the first far larger than the second; a ring of noise has a big step at every sample boundary including this one, so the ratio, not the step, is the reading. A ratio near 1 means the loop point is indistinguishable from every other sample boundary in the clip — which is the only definition of seamless that survives being listened to.

argtypedescription
trackTrack

glide(track: Track, o: { [string]: any }) → void

A tone that GLIDES from `f0` to `f1` across `dur`, under an attack/release envelope, with optional harmonics stacked over it. `hit` falls; this one can rise, which is what a forty-metre head coming out of the ground needs. Written with wraparound like every other event here.

argtypedescription
trackTrack
o{ [string]: any }

interleave(track: Track) → buffer

Interleave to the shape `asset.create` and `audio.encodePcm` read: L R L R …, f32, little-endian.
