What it does

game.audio.Sound

Everything First Light: Crowfeet is heard through. One component, on the scene's sound entity; nothing else in the game plays a sound.

The mix

ChannelWhat is on itLevel
ambientthe two beds — the sea below, the roost above0.62
musicthe two score decks0.50
sfxevery one-shot1.00
voicethe Old Crow's nine lines1.00

Master 0.9. The bed sits under everything: it is the room, not an event.

The climb is audible with your eyes shut

Two ambience beds run at once and cross with the crow's height. amb_sea is loudest on the strand and thins to about a quarter of itself at the roost; amb_roost — air over the summit and a few birds that have not settled — comes up to meet it. So the last ledge sounds nothing like the first, and the light takes a little more of the sea away as it comes.

The score turns over with the light

music_night and music_dawn are the same sixteen-second drone on the same E, one with the minor third and one with the major. Both decks run in parallel and are crossfaded by CF.state.dawn between 0.15 and 0.85 — at dawn 0.5 each sits at exactly half. There is no track change: what the player hears is a third turning over as the sky does.

One line, spoken and printed

CF.say(speaker, text, key) fires line. The presentation slice prints the words; this component plays game/audio/voice/<key>.soundClip if one exists. The two are independent on purpose: a key with no clip is a line that is quiet, never a line that is lost. While a line is speaking the beds and the score duck to 0.40 and come back.

The nine keys are open_1, hunger_low, eat_1, crumble_1, first_light, won_1, lost_sea, lost_starved and lost_late.

What it answers

hop · land (by hardness — soft under 0.5, hard over) · grab · pullup · drop · peck · eat (by food.kind: grub / limpet / crowfoot) · crumble · fall · tooWeak · hungerLow · firstLight · phase (the flock lifting on a win; the sea, the collapse or the murder leaving without you on each loss) · reset · pause · line · ui.

CF.emit("ui", which) takes move / confirm / back / pause and their aliases (nav, select, start, restart, cancel, resume, menu, …); anything else answers with the quiet tick, so a new screen is never silent.

What another slice can ask of it

local sound = entity.find("sound").component.get("game.audio.Sound")
sound.speaking() --> the line key being spoken, or nil
sound.play("caw", 0.6) --> any recipe by name, for a noise with no event

Notes

Every source is non-spatial: the listener rides the camera and this is a mix, not a room. The beds loop with the Audio component's own looping field and are baked codec = "pcm" so they join without a click. Clips come from game/audio/recipes via game/audio/bake.luau; the voice lines were generated once and cached as assets — nothing is synthesised or generated at play time.

The blackboard is a module, and a module that reloads under a running session either becomes a new table or re-runs into the same one with an empty listener list. Either way a component that registered against the old bus hears nothing and says nothing about it — the whole soundtrack goes quiet with every reading still green. So this component does not trust its subscription: every couple of seconds it emits a private event through the module require hands back now, and if its own listener did not hear it back, it moves onto the live bus.

Owned by the sound slice. See /zero/source/design/spec.md.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

Sound — everything First Light: Crowfeet is heard through. Mounted once on the scene's `sound` entity. It owns the whole mix: * two BEDS that cross the climb — `amb_sea` under you, `amb_roost` above. The sea is loudest on the strand and thins as you go up; the murder on the summit comes up to meet you. So altitude is audible with your eyes shut, and the last ledge sounds nothing like the first. * two SCORE decks running in parallel on the same 16-second drone, crossfaded by `CF.state.dawn`: E minor at night, E major at first light. The one musical event of the round is that third turning over. * a ONE-SHOT for every event the climb makes, on the "sfx" channel. * the nine Old Crow lines on the "voice" channel, played by the key that came with the `line` event. The words are printed by the presentation slice whether or not a voice exists for them, so a line is never lost — only, at worst, quiet. * UI answers on the `ui` event. Everything is non-spatial: the listener rides the camera and this is a mix, not a room. The beds and the score loop with the `Audio` component's own `looping` and are encoded `codec = "pcm"` (#8873/#8874) so they join to themselves without a click. While a line is speaking the beds and the score duck under it and come back. Clips are baked from `game/audio/recipes` by `game/audio/bake.luau`; the voice lines are generated once by `audio_gen.speech` and cached as assets. Nothing is synthesised or generated at play time. Owned by the sound slice. See /zero/source/design/spec.md.

Move onto the live blackboard. Two things can put this component on a bus nobody is emitting to: the module reloads as a NEW table, or it re-runs into the same table with a FRESH, empty listener list. Neither is visible from anywhere — no error, no warning, just a game that has gone completely quiet — so this asks a question instead of inspecting: every couple of seconds it emits a private event through the module `require` hands back NOW, and if its own listener did not hear it, the bus it is registered on is not the one the game is using. Then it moves.

# CF The blackboard of *First Light: Crowfeet*. One module every part of the game requires: ```luau local CF = require("game.CF") ``` ## What is in it | | | |---|---| | `CF.RULES` | every number the game is tuned by | | `CF.PALETTE` | the colours everything composes to | | `CF.FILMED` | the shape the run films at (1080x1440) | | `CF.layout` | the cliff: `ledges`, `food`, `summitY`, `top`, `halfWidth`, `apex` | | `CF.state` | what is true right now | | `CF.landing` / `CF.grabbable` | the two ledging tests | | `CF.on` / `CF.off` / `CF.emit` | the event bus | | `CF.setPhase` / `CF.reset` / `CF.say` / `CF.progress` / `CF.sz` | | | `CF.camera` | filled in by the camera: `panTo` `zoomTo` `release` `kick` | ## The cliff `CF.layout.ledges` is 28 shelves from the strand at y 0 to the roost at `summitY`, each `{ id, x, y, w, kind, fallen }` with `kind` one of `strand` `rock` `crumble` `roost`. A shelf's TOP is at `y` and it spans `x ± w/2`. `CF.layout.food` is `{ id, ledge, kind, x, y, eaten }` with `kind` one of `grub` `limpet` `crowfoot`. It is built deterministically, so every peer and every slice sees the same cliff. Two numbers shape it. `CF.layout.apex` is how high one hop rises. Every SHORT gap is under it and is landed on; every TALL gap is over it, so the only way up is to catch the lip. And the shelf above a crumble shelf is placed back over the shelf below it, so a crumble that has given way never seals the climb. ## The two ledging tests - `CF.landing(x, yFrom, yTo)` — the shelf whose top the crow's feet crossed going down this frame, highest first. Returns nil, or the ledge. - `CF.grabbable(x, feetY, facing)` — the shelf whose near lip is within reach of an airborne crow's crown, in the direction it is facing. Returns nil, or the ledge and the x of that lip. Both ignore a shelf whose `fallen` is set. ## The state `phase` (`title` `opening` `climb` `won` `lost`) · `hunger` · `dawn` 0..1 · `time` · `crow { x, y, vx, vy, facing, grounded, hanging, ledge }` · `altitude` · `eaten` · `hops` · `crumbled` · `lostReason` (`starved` `sea` `late`) · `paused`. The climb slice writes it; everyone else reads it. `CF.reset()` puts a round back — the state, the food and the fallen shelves — and `restart` is answered here, so a round can always be put back. ## The events `start` `restart` `reset` `phase` `pause` · `hop` `land` `grab` `pullup` `drop` `peck` `eat` `tooWeak` `crumble` `crumbled` `fall` · `hungerLow` `firstLight` · `line` `ui`. `crumble` fires when the crow's weight first lands on a crumble shelf, and it has `RULES.crumbleDelay` left to stand. `crumbled` fires when it goes. ## Laying out for any screen `CF.sz(fraction)` is a fraction of the SHORTER screen edge, read live from `ui.screenSize()`, so one number lays out the same on a phone held either way and on a television.
