What it does

game.staging.sequences

Every authored moment in SLAG SAINT, as data: a shot path, the lines spoken over it, and cues that raise the game's own events at the right instant. Director plays them; nothing in here touches state directly.

local Seq = require("game.staging.sequences")
cutscene.play(Seq.entrance())
FunctionThe moment
Seq.title()A 26-second drift under the title card. No letterbox — the card owns the frame.
Seq.opening()The descent, the two Emberward lines, the first bell.
Seq.entrance()The crane from the saint's feet to its bell, and its greeting.
Seq.phaseBeat(n)1.9 seconds on the chains snapping, or the chest coming open.
Seq.victory()The bell close, the light leaving from the feet up, the hold.
Seq.defeat(body)Ground level, the lean-in, and what is left of the ward.
Seq.pulse(s, band)A letterbox squeeze over live gameplay. No camera, no freeze.

The frame is portrait

1080x1440. Every shot is composed on the vertical: the camera stands close and cranes UP a figure that does not fit, rather than backing off to fit it in. There is no wide establishing shot in this game because the screen cannot hold one.

Nothing here is in world coordinates

Seq.stage() reads where the saint and the ward actually are and returns the frame every shot is built in — a forward axis from the ward to the saint, a side axis across it, the gap between them, and how high the bell-head is this phase. fromSaint, fromWard and onSaint place a camera station in it.

This matters because the saint walks: boss_root was measured mid-fight at z = -7.5 with the ward at z = -15, nowhere near the z = +11 the arena declares as its origin. A look that must track a moving target through a shot uses the entity anchor (look = "boss_root" with a lookOffset) instead, which the cutscene resolves every frame.

Distances are measured against st.bell, derived from Rules.BOSS, so a retune of the saint's height re-composes every shot rather than breaking it.

The lines

Every line is raised as a vo event through Rules.say, which the presentation slice prints and the sound slice speaks. Seq.SCHEDULE records when each one lands, and Seq.fallbackSubtitles(name) turns that into a cutscene subtitle track — which the Director attaches only when the presentation slice is not in the world, so a line is never lost and never doubled.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

game/staging/sequences — every authored moment in SLAG SAINT, as data. Each function here returns a cutscene definition (see the `cutscenes` guide): a shot path, the lines spoken over it, and cues that raise the game's own events at the right instant. `Director` plays them and owns the mode machine; nothing in this file touches state directly. THE FRAME IS 1080x1440 — PORTRAIT. Every shot is composed on the vertical: the camera stands close and cranes UP a figure that does not fit the frame, rather than backing off to fit it in. A wide establishing shot is the one thing this screen cannot hold. NOTHING HERE IS IN WORLD COORDINATES. The saint walks — `boss_root` was measured mid-fight at z = -7.5 with the ward at z = -15, nowhere near the z = +11 the arena declares as its origin — so a shot written against the arena's coordinates frames empty floor the moment the fight moves. Every camera station below is built in `Stage`: a frame whose forward axis runs from the ward to the saint, wherever the two of them are standing when the moment begins. A look that must track (the saint's head through a beat) uses the entity anchor instead, which the cutscene resolves every frame.

say(key: string) → void

Raise one of the scripted lines by key. Unknown keys are ignored rather than erroring, so a cue can name a line that has not been written yet.

stage( ) → Stage

Read the fight's current geometry. Everything a shot needs is derived from this, so a moment frames the fight wherever it has wandered to.

fromSaint(st: Stage, ahead: number, side: number, up: number) → void

A point measured from the SAINT: `ahead` metres toward the ward (so a positive number stands in front of it), `side` metres to its left, `up` metres above the floor it stands on.

fromWard(st: Stage, ahead: number, side: number, up: number) → void

The same, measured from the WARD: `ahead` metres toward the saint.

onSaint(st: Stage, up: number) → void

A point on the saint's own vertical axis, `up` metres off the floor.

title( ) → any

TITLE — a slow drift across the basin while the title card sits on it. No letterbox: the presentation slice's title card owns the frame, and a band would cover the top and bottom of it (the bands are drawn over UI). It is skippable, so any key starts the game.

opening( ) → any

OPENING — the descent, the two Emberward lines, the first bell. Fades up out of black high in the foundry and falls into the basin, then settles at the Emberward's shoulder, then the bell rings and the camera is already looking up before the player knows what at. fadeOut is 0 and the entrance's fadeIn is 0, so the two play as one continuous image with a hard cut between beats.

entrance( ) → any

ENTRANCE — the saint, head to foot, before the player may touch it. One continuous crane: the look travels from the saint's feet to its bell while the camera pulls back and the lens tightens, so the figure grows in the frame rather than shrinking out of it. It ends on the fight's own framing, which makes the hand-back to the combat camera a soft cut.

phaseBeat(phase: number) → any

PHASE BEAT — short on purpose. You notice it; you do not lose the fight. Under two seconds, hard in and hard out. Phase 2 is the chains snapping and the thing standing up; phase 3 is the chest coming open, so the beat aims at the furnace door rather than at the head.

argtypedescription

victory( ) → any

VICTORY — the light goes out of it from the feet upward.

defeat(bodyRef: any) → any

DEFEAT — from the floor, looking up at the thing that is still standing.

argtypedescription
bodyRefany

pulse(seconds: number, band: number) → any

PULSE — a moment over live gameplay. No camera, no freeze. A cutscene with no shots takes nothing: the player keeps playing through their own camera and the letterbox squeezes for a beat. This is what marks the saint kneeling, or a Quench landing, without stopping the fight.

fallbackSubtitles(name: string) → any

Cutscene `subtitles` for a sequence, or nil when it has no lines.
