What it does

air

Slice C of Mother Liquor — everything in the film that is made of air.

The cold vapour, in three parts that do not overlap: a sheet pouring over the front edge of the worktop, a pool creeping south across the vinyl toward shot 9's floor camera, and a thread already leaving the fume hood in the first frame of the film. Dust hanging in whatever light there is. The bunsen — an inner cone and an outer mantle drawn as luminous shells, a few sparks, and the heat above them that takes the tiled splashback apart. The beam the hood strip cuts through the vapour. The rings a dosed drop leaves on the liquid. Condensate beading and running on the glassware rack's front pane. The extract fan. And, once the film is under the surface, the motes and the convection currents inside the liquid.

Registered as Film.register("air", …) at order 30. Serves shots 7, 8 and 9 outright and supports 1, 5, 6, 12 and 13.

The clock

tick(t, dt, shot, u) is the only time in here. Every emitter is stepped by hand with :update(dt) rather than left on the engine's own particle clock, and every shader in demo/shaders/air/ reads its time from per-instance lane 0 rather than from uniforms.time. That is what makes the air identical on a second pass of the film, and it is why the air moves in edit mode as well as in play.

An emitter that is not spawning and whose last particle aged out a full lifetime ago is skipped rather than stepped, so each one costs a compute dispatch only across the part of the film it is actually in.

What it draws with

AssetWhere
demo/shaders/air/heat_shimmerthe hot air over the burner, as the scene bent behind it
demo/shaders/air/flame_shellthe inner cone and the mantle, as luminous shells
demo/shaders/air/light_shaftthe hood lamp's beam where it crosses the vapour
demo/shaders/air/condensatebeads and runners on the rack pane, each one a lens
demo/shaders/air/drop_ringsthe travelling wave a drop leaves on the liquid
demo/materials/air/*one material per shader, plus the two particle sprites

The particle emitters are recognised as this stage's own by the material prefix demo.materials.air., which is how a rebuild collects the emitters a previous one left behind — emitters are not entities, so nothing takes them away with the scene.

Marks it reads

Film.MARKS.bunsen, .hoodMouth, .hoodLamp, .rack, .meniscus, .extractFan, .interior; Film.ROOM.benchTop, .benchFrontZ, .halfX, .halfZ; and Film.PALETTE.vapour, .bunsenCone, .bunsenMantle, .lumin, .liquidViolet. Nothing here restates one.

The flame is seated on the top of the barrel the room slice builds at Film.MARKS.bunsen, which ends 15 cm above that mark; Film.MARKS.bunsenTip then falls inside the inner cone, which is where shot 7 is pointed.

demo/stages/air.module — SLICE C · Air & Fire Everything in this film that is made of air. The cold vapour: a sheet going over the bench lip, a pool creeping across the floor and breaking around a bench leg, and a thread already leaving the fume hood in the first shot. Dust in whatever light there is. The bunsen — its inner cone, its mantle, its sparks, and the heat that takes the tiled splashback behind it apart. The beam the hood strip cuts through the vapour. The rings a drop leaves on the liquid. Condensate beading and running on the glassware rack's pane. The extract fan. And in Act III, the motes and the convection inside the liquid. Serves shots 7, 8 and 9 outright; supports 1, 5, 6, 12 and 13. THE CLOCK. `tick(t, dt, shot, u)` is the only time here. Every emitter is stepped by hand with `:update(dt)` rather than left on the engine's own particle clock, and every shader reads its time from per-instance lane 0 rather than from `uniforms.time`. That is what makes the air identical on a second pass of the film, and it is why the air moves in edit mode as well as in play. THE MARKS. Every fixed point comes out of Film.MARKS / Film.ROOM / Film.PALETTE. Nothing here restates one.

curve(...: number) → any

A NumberSequence from evenly-spaced stops. `NumberSequence.new` takes a keypoint list or a pair of endpoints, and a run of values over a particle's life is the shape every curve here is easiest to read in, so the spacing is worked out once and written nowhere else.

card(name: string, pos: { number }, size: { number }, euler: { number }, material: string) → any

A flat card. `@builtin::meshes.plane` lies in XZ, so a card standing up in the world is that plane pitched a quarter turn, and its local scale is (width, -, height).

lane(e: any, x: number, y: number, z: number, w: number) → void

The per-instance channel every air shader takes its clock from. Four agents build this one scene at once, so an entity this stage spawned can be taken away between one frame and the next by somebody else's reload. The film disables a stage the first time its tick raises, which would take the whole of the air out of the film over a despawn the next rebuild undoes anyway — so a write to an entity that has gone is skipped rather than fatal.

standing( ) → boolean

True while this stage's own entities are still in the world.

buildVapour( ) → void

buildDust( ) → void

Nothing about a room reads as air until something hangs in it. These are almost invisible on their own and exist only to be found by a lamp.

buildFlame( ) → void

buildShaft( ) → void

Shot 8 wants the lamp's light visible where it crosses the vapour. The card hangs from the lamp down onto the floor east of the hood, in the plane the shot looks along.

buildRings( ) → void

buildCondensate( ) → void

Shot 6 dollies south past the glassware, and the rack's front pane is between the camera and the glass. Cold room, wet air: it beads, and some of it runs.

buildFan( ) → void

Behind the hood grille, turning throughout the film. It is a small thing at the top-left of shot 1, and it is the only mechanism in the room that never stops.

vapourDrive(t: number) → void

The vapour's schedule, in film seconds. The sheet has to have been pouring for a while before shot 8 arrives or there is nothing on the floor to see, and the pool has to have been creeping for longer still before it can reach shot 9's floor camera — so both open during shot 6 and neither survives the cut under the surface.
