What it does

bells

The clock of Ashcross: nine tolls, NB.RULES.secondsPerBell apart, and the pressure they put on everything else.

game.rounds owns this module and drives it — nothing here runs a loop of its own, so the night stops when the round stops.

local Bells = require("game.bells")

Bells.begin()            -- start counting
Bells.update(dt) -- once a frame from the rounds director
Bells.toll() -- ring the next one now (tests, a scripted beat)
Bells.halt() -- stop without losing the count
Bells.reset() -- back to the top of the night

Bells.count()            -- 0..9
Bells.untilNext() -- seconds to the next toll
Bells.pressure()         -- 0..1, how late it is
Bells.miasmaRise() -- extra contagion/second the air itself costs
Bells.boldness() -- range and speed multiplier the infected read
Bells.line(n)            -- the Bellman's line for bell n

Every toll emits "bell" { n }, plays NB.sfx("bell", { n, pressure }), and speaks the Bellman's line through NB.say. It also mirrors the count into NB.state.bell / NB.state.bellClock, which is what the field kit's HUD reads.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

conforms to

zero/source-extract/v2

strict

heartbeat( ) → void

Say that a play-mode frame has happened. A component's `update` runs in PLAY MODE ONLY; a `task.loop` runs in edit mode as well. So the round's director cannot tell from its own loop whether the game is being PLAYED — and a night that counts itself down behind an editor window is a broken clock. `Patient.component` calls this once per frame from its `update`, and `beats()` is what the director watches.

beats( ) → number

How many play-mode frames have been seen. Compare it across two frames: unchanged means nobody is playing.

reset( ) → void

Put the clock back to the top of the night.

begin( ) → void

Start counting. Idempotent.

halt( ) → void

Stop counting without losing the count — a pause, an end card.

count( ) → number return B

clock( ) → number return B

untilNext( ) → number

pressure( ) → number

0 at the first bell, 1 at the ninth. The single number every other system reads to know how late it is.

miasmaRise( ) → number

Contagion per second the air itself costs, outside any standing miasma. Nothing for the first third of the night; by the ninth bell simply standing in the street is losing ground against the decay rate.

boldness( ) → number

What the infected read. They sense further and move faster as it gets late.

line(n: number) → string

The Bellman's line for bell `n`, or nil.

nnumber

toll( ) → void

Ring the next bell now, whatever the clock says. The rounds director calls this from `update`; a test calls it directly to walk the night forward.

update(dt: number) → void

Advance the night. Call once per frame while the round is running.
