What it does
room — the lab and every material in it
Slice A of Mother Liquor. The analytical chemistry lab the film opens in, and
every non-hero surface in it. Registers with demo.film as the stage room
(order 10) and spawns its whole set under the root the film hands build.
What it puts in the room
- Shell — vinyl floor, four plaster walls, skirting, a suspended mineral-tile ceiling on a T-bar grid, and the door with its wired-glass vision panel. The shell is sealed: the film kills the skybox, so a gap would read black, and every wall slab stands outside the room volume so no corner can open.
- Bench run — a black epoxy slab with a drip lip, two cupboard carcasses and one open bay on a steel frame (which is what shot 9 looks up past), and a splashback of real 152 mm tiles with real grout gaps, because shot 7 is an 8° macro on that wall.
- Fume hood — base cupboard, white liner and baffles, the strip-lamp housing the Light slice drives, a framed sash on its counterweight, the airflow tell-tale taped to the sash rail, the plenum, its grille and the ring the Air slice's extract fan turns in.
- Glassware rack — six shelves, a battened back panel, two sliding front panes, and about ninety pieces of lathed borosilicate and amber glass in two ranks, so most of the glass shot 6 dollies past is read through other glass.
- Bench furniture — the stainless sink and its swan-neck mixer, the magnetic stirrer/hotplate, the burette on its retort stand, the bunsen's body and its gas line, pipettes, and reagent bottles on the bench and on the shelf above it.
- Dressing — gas taps, galvanised conduit, a pinboard, a wall clock, a stool, a bin, a first-aid box, and the two fluorescent fittings the Light slice's tubes live in.
What it moves
A stage is not finished when it is placed and lit. This one moves:
| the fume hood sash | trembling on a hood that is running — a fast rattle under a slow swell |
| the airflow tell-tale | streaming into the mouth, which is how you can see a hood is on |
| the wall clock | a second hand that steps once a second, and a minute hand that crawls |
| the burette's column | stepping down 115 mm across the film as the flask is dosed |
| the chromatography column | a drop swelling, letting go and falling into the beaker under it, every 2.65 s |
| the sink tap | one drop about every four seconds |
| a note on the pinboard | lifting in the draught the hood pulls across the room |
What it depends on
demo.filmforMARKS,ROOM,PALETTEand the clock. No fixed point in this module is written twice.demo.materials.room.*— thirty-nine authored materials, anddemo.shaders.room.lab_glassbehind the nine that are glass.demo.meshes.room.*— thirty lathed profiles.
