What it does

flares

The dying star is not done yet. Every forty-odd seconds it draws breath and throws a flare down the system: five seconds of warning, then eight seconds of it.

A sunjammer's sails do not care that the light is killing you. Caught in the open you take hull AND you take charge. Within shelterRadius of a registered site — a station hull, a wreck, the Gate's arch — you take neither. That is the whole decision: cross now and pay hull for a full tank, or sit in the lee of the last place you scanned and wait it out with what you have.

The wash is real, not a HUD message: the ambient light of the whole system swings warm and bright over a half-sine, and a wave of embers comes past the ship travelling away from the star.

Flares.trigger(seconds) brings the next flare forward — for a scripted moment at a site, or for a test that will not wait forty seconds to see one.

Emits flare(phase) and publishes Drift.state.flare = { phase, t, timeToNext, sheltered, intensity }.

flares — the dying star is not done yet. SLICE E. Every forty-odd seconds the star draws breath and throws a flare down the system. You get five seconds of warning, then eight seconds of it. A sunjammer's sails do not care that the light is killing you: caught in the open you take hull AND you take charge. Behind a site — a station hull, a wreck, the Gate's arch — you take neither. That is the whole decision: cross now and pay hull for a full tank, or sit in the lee of the last place you scanned and wait it out with what you have. The wash is real, not a HUD message: the ambient light of the entire system swings warm and bright, and a wave of embers comes past the ship travelling away from the star. Publishes `Drift.state.flare` for the HUD: { phase = "calm"|"warning"|"active", t = seconds-in-phase, timeToNext = seconds, sheltered = bool, intensity = 0..1 } and emits `flare(phase)` on the bus.

Bring the next flare forward to `seconds` from now (default: straight into the warning). The star does this on its own schedule; this is the handle for anything that wants to make it happen — a scripted moment at a site, or a test that will not wait forty seconds to see one.

# voidutil The small shared maths the Aurelian Drift hazard modules all need. - **Deterministic RNG** — `V.rng(seed)` is a 32-bit LCG seeded from a string, with `next` / `range` / `int` / `dir`. The world is multiplayer and the hazards are built independently on every peer, so seeding from a string (never `os.clock` or `math.random`) is what makes two peers agree on where the debris is. - **Vectors** — `add` / `sub` / `scale` / `len` / `norm` / `lerp` / `dist` / `dist2` / `arr`, on plain `{x, y, z}` tables. - **Rotation** — `quatAxisAngle(axis, radians)` and `lookRotation(dir)` (points a mesh's +Z down a direction), plus `arr4(q)`. - **Routes** — `V.routes(sites, origin)` returns every crossing between the origin and the registered sites, longest first, and `V.along(route, t)` walks one. Hazards are placed against this rather than coordinates. - **Entity bookkeeping** — `spawn` (always temporary), `despawnAll`, `alive`, and `despawnByPrefix(mount, prefix)`, which sweeps a mount for anything a previous instance of a hot-reloaded module left behind. - **`V.queue()`** — a spawn queue. A hazard field is a hundred entities and spawning a hundred entities inside one `update()` is a watchdog halt, so build enqueues and update drains a few per frame.
