What it does

sound.bake

Every clip in Standing Ovation, synthesised from noise and sine waves and baked to a .soundClip. Nothing is fetched and nothing is recorded, so the whole soundtrack is reproducible from this one file: same seeds, same samples, every run. 24 kHz mono, stored as uncompressed PCM.

require("sound.bake").build() -- bake what is missing
require("sound.bake").build(true) -- re-author all thirteen in place
require("sound.bake").one("sov_rain", true)

They land in /source/sound/clips/ and are resolved as asset.resolve("sound.clips.sov_rain", "soundClip").

How they are made

Rng is a named multiplicative stream per clip, so a texture is the same on every bake and two clips never share one. Every looping bed is closed with an equal-power crossfade of its tail over its head (seamless), so it does not tick once a period, and peak-normalised afterwards. Everything applausey is built from one clapGrain — a 2 ms slap of band-limited noise plus a short room — stamped into a bed at event times, gains and pitches; the only difference between a house that is together and a house that is not is whether those event times come off a grid.

sound.bake — the soundtrack of "Standing Ovation", synthesised. Every clip in this film is made here, from noise and sine waves, and baked to a `.soundClip` asset. Nothing is fetched and nothing is recorded, so the whole soundtrack is reproducible from this one file: same seeds, same samples, every run. The pieces: rain the storm on a dome nobody repaired — under all 90 seconds roomtone 1,412 empty seats and a lot of air ballast the sodium worklight's choke, buzzing and guttering scoreThin Acts I-III: two low strings and a beating minor second scoreOvation Act IV: the same harmony with the applause growing out of it clapPair one pair of hands gloveClap one pair of WHITE-GLOVED hands, close to the lens applauseSparse a handful of pairs, uncorrelated applauseFull a full house, uncorrelated applauseUnison a full house landing on one grid filament a footlight igniting drip water off the dome onto the rake curtain the oxblood house curtain running in `Bake.build()` writes the ones that do not exist yet; `Bake.build(true)` re-authors all of them in place, keeping their guids.

seamless(b: buffer, n: number, fade: number) → number

Equal-power crossfade the tail over the head so a looping bed does not tick once a second. `fade` seconds come off the end of the clip.

trim(b: buffer, n: number) → buffer

Trim a buffer to `n` samples (seamless() shortens the useful length).

clapGrain(seed: number, bright: number, tail: number) → void

A clap is a 2 ms slap of band-limited noise and a short room. `bright` moves it from a gloved thud to a bare-handed crack.

Mix a grain into a bed at a sample offset, at a gain and a pitch-ish stretch done by sample skipping (cheap and audibly fine for a crowd).

rain( ) → void

Rain on a dome. Broadband, with a mid body and a sizzle over it, slowly breathing, and droplets that made it through the hole.

roomtone( ) → void

Room tone: the air in 1,412 empty seats, and the building around them.

ballast( ) → void

The sodium worklight's ballast. 100 Hz and its harmonics, a choke buzz over them, and the flutter of a lamp that is not well.

scoreThin( ) → void

Acts I-III. Two low strings, a beating minor second high above them, and a swell that never resolves. Thin on purpose: this is a room, not a cue.

scoreOvation( ) → void

Act IV. The same harmony opened out into fifths and octaves, with a 2.2 Hz pulse of clapped noise growing out of the middle of it. The score BECOMES the applause: by the end of the loop the pulse is louder than the strings.

clapPair( ) → void

gloveClap( ) → void

White cotton over a palm: the crack is gone and only the thud is left.

applauseSparse( ) → void

applauseFull( ) → void

applauseUnison( ) → void

filament( ) → void

A footlight igniting: the tink of cold glass, then the filament finding its note and settling.

drip( ) → void

One thread of water off the dome, landing on the rake.

curtain( ) → void

The oxblood curtain running in: a lot of wool moving, a rope through a sheave, and the weight at the bottom of it arriving.

step( ) → void

One shoe on a black-painted board. A soft leather thump, the board answering under it, and a little scuff of grit.

breath( ) → void

Breathing, from 45 cm away, by someone whose two halves are not quite on the same clock: the in-breath and the out-breath are at different rates, so the pattern never repeats where you expect it to.

one(name: string, overwrite: boolean?) → string

Bake one clip by name. Returns a line describing what it wrote.
