What it does

aiDrivers.paths

The route geometry AI drivers drive by, computed once per path: resample(points, loop, spacing) (even spacing; sparse waypoints are joined with a Catmull-Rom spline), normals (right of travel), curvatures (signed 1/m, positive turning right, smoothed), racingLine(points, loop, halfWidth) (each point slid sideways within the road to minimise curvature: outside on entry, apex clipped, outside on exit), offset (a lane), speedProfile(points, loop, curvature, { latG, maxSpeed, decel }) (cornering limit sqrt(latG*g/k) with braking points worked backwards from every corner), distances and nearest. Pure functions over {vector}; AiDriver calls them, and anything else that needs a racing line or a speed plan (a ghost car, a minimap line, a track editor) can too.

local Paths = require("aiDrivers.paths")
local pts = Paths.resample(waypoints, true, 2)
local line = Paths.racingLine(pts, true, 3.5)
local v = Paths.speedProfile(line, true, Paths.curvatures(line, true), { latG = 0.9, maxSpeed = 60, decel = 8 })

resample(points: { vector }, loop: boolean, spacing: number?) → void

Points at an even `spacing` (metres) along the route. Sparse points (further apart than ~3 x spacing) are joined with a Catmull-Rom spline, dense ones linearly. A loop's last point is not repeated.

points{ vector }

normals(pts: { vector }, loop: boolean) → void

Unit right-of-travel vectors (horizontal) at each point.

curvatures(pts: { vector }, loop: boolean, window: number?) → void

Signed curvature (1/m) at each point, positive turning right, smoothed over +-`window` points (default 2).

windownumber?

racingLine(pts: { vector }, loop: boolean, halfWidth: number, iterations: number?, normals: { vector }?) → void

A racing line: each point slid sideways (within +-halfWidth of the centre) to minimise curvature: outside on entry, the apex clipped, outside on exit. Returns the line and each point's sideways offset (positive right). `iterations` per resolution level (default 60).

normals{ vector }?

offset(pts: { vector }, loop: boolean, offset: number, normals: { vector }?) → void

Points slid `offset` metres to the right of travel (a lane), or per point when `offset` is a list.

offsetnumber
normals{ vector }?

speedProfile(pts: { vector }, loop: boolean, curv: { number }, opts: { latG: number, maxSpeed: number, decel: number }) → void

Target speed (m/s) at each point: the cornering limit sqrt(latG * 9.81 / |k|) capped at maxSpeed, then pulled down ahead of every corner so the car can slow at `decel` m/s^2 in time (the braking points).

distances(pts: { vector }, loop: boolean) → void

Cumulative distance (m) at each point; the second result is the whole length (back to the start for a loop).

argtypedescription
pts{ vector }
loopboolean

nearest(pts: { vector }, pos: vector) → void

The index of the point nearest `pos` (horizontal), searching the whole path, and its squared distance.
