staging.Cutscenes

HOLLOWBELL's staging: the moments the game takes the camera, and the camera it gives back.

The moments

Each beat is a cutscene definition from staging.stage, played through the engine's cutscene runtime — which takes the viewport, draws the bands, holds the player, and gives all of it back however the beat ends.

beatwhenwhat it holds
openingHollow.staging.opening, from phase openingthe cracked bell, the Cloister, and the Lamplighter at the top of the descent
gate"gateOpened"(n)the wall between two chambers coming open, with the line for that gate
boss intro"bossEngaged"up past the Bellwarden to the bell it has been ringing, then down onto it
deathHollow.staging.death, from phase deaddown onto the body, then up and away from it
victoryHollow.staging.victory, from phase wonin on the fallen Bellwarden, then up to the bell that has stopped

A beat ends the same way whether it played out, was skipped, was superseded or could not start: the camera goes back to the rig and the Director is told the beat is over exactly once. menu.confirm and menu.back skip a beat, which carries the keyboard, the pad's south / east / Start, and the on-screen touch buttons; the cutscene runtime answers the keyboard's own skip keys as well.

Turn cinematics off to make every beat return at once, for a slice that wants gameplay without waiting through the staging.

The camera

The rig is aimed at a focus entity this component moves, so the framing and Hollow.shake are one mechanism rather than a fight with the isometric controller over the camera's transform.

  • Lead — the focus sits ahead of the hero, north, so the descent is on screen rather than behind them.
  • Distance — read from the live ui.screenSize() every quarter second. A screen narrower than the 3:4 the game is composed for pulls the camera back until the play is as wide on screen as it is at that shape; a wider screen keeps the authored distance and sees more.
  • Shake — Hollow.shake(strength, seconds) translates the focus, so the whole frame moves together and the horizon does not swim.

The sound

Three clips, synthesised from arithmetic in staging.stage so a beat has a voice whatever a generation service is doing: a cracked bronze bell, a falling swell for the death card, and an opening chord for the victory card. They are registered with Hollow.sound.register under staging-only names and played through Hollow.sound.play; where no mix has come up yet, the beat plays them itself.

The light

Each beat carries one lamp of its own, placed and taken away by its own cues. The crypt is lit for play, not for a close-up on a bell or on a body on the floor, and nothing a beat does to the light survives it.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

Cutscenes — HOLLOWBELL's staging. Owns two things and keeps them out of each other's way: the moments — the opening crane down from the bell, the beat a gate opens on, the Bellwarden's introduction, and the two endings. Each is a cutscene definition from staging.stage, played through the engine's cutscene runtime, which takes the camera and gives it back however the beat ends. the gameplay camera — the isometric rig's distance, lead and shake. The rig is aimed at a focus entity this component moves, so the framing and Hollow.shake are one mechanism rather than a fight with the controller over the camera's transform. Registered through Hollow.staging.opening / death / victory. Whatever happens to a beat, the camera goes back to the rig and the rig back to the hero.

fn?

bakeClips( ) → void

Sound. Three clips this slice bakes for itself, registered under staging-only names so the sound slice's own library is untouched. They are played through Hollow.sound so the mix owns them; where no provider has come up yet, a local one-shot source keeps the beats from being silent.

localSource( ) → void

playStagingSound(name: string, opts: ?) → void

Play one of this slice's own sounds. The mix answers when it is up; otherwise the beat plays it itself rather than going quiet.

opts?

keyEntity( ) → void

The key light a beat carries. The crypt is lit for play; a close-up on the bell or on a body on the floor needs a lamp of its own, and it goes away with the beat, so nothing a cinematic does survives into gameplay.

keyLight(spec: Stage.KeySpec?) → void

argtypedescription
specStage.KeySpec?

restoreCamera( ) → void

The gameplay camera. Hollow.applyCamera reads the live layer's camera, and a teardown can run with no layer loaded at all, so the reach is guarded rather than caught.

rigEntity( ) → void

focusEntity(rig: ?) → void

The point the rig orbits: the hero, pushed north by the lead so the descent ahead of them is on screen. It lives in the rig's own parent space, which is the space the controller reads its target in.

releaseSkip( ) → void

Beats.

armSkip(pb: ?) → void

A cinematic is something any of the three device families can get out of: the cutscene runtime answers the keyboard's own skip keys, and the menu map's Confirm and Back carry the pad's south/east/Start and the on-screen touch buttons.

skip( ) → void

clearTimers( ) → void

handBack( ) → void

Hand the frame back: the cutscene runtime restores the viewport itself, and this puts the rig's own tuning back on top of it so the hand-off never leaves the camera somewhere the player did not put it.

# staging.stage The shots, the framing arithmetic and the synthesised sound behind HOLLOWBELL's staging. Pure data and maths: nothing here touches the scene, which is what lets a beat be re-timed and watched again without reloading the component that wires it up. ```luau local Stage = require("staging.stage") ``` ## Framing `Stage.framing(width, height)` answers the gameplay camera for a live screen size — the distance, the lead ahead of the hero, and the lens. It reads `Hollow.CAMERA` as the authored base and never writes it back, so it is idempotent however often it runs. `Stage.station(center, distance)` is where the camera stands to look at a point from the authored isometric angle — the same arithmetic `@builtin::controller.isometric` runs, which is how a cinematic ends exactly on the gameplay station and the hand-off is not a cut. ## Beats `Stage.opening(ctx)` · `Stage.gate(ctx, n)` · `Stage.boss(ctx)` · `Stage.death(ctx)` · `Stage.victory(ctx, at)` Each returns a cutscene definition. `ctx` carries the live framing and the three things a beat reaches the running game through — `say(key)`, `sound(name, opts)` and `key(spec)` — plus `captions`, which says whether a caption band is already showing spoken lines. Where nothing is, the beat carries the line as its own subtitle, so a spoken line is never lost to a slice that has not landed. The chambers are walled from each other at the gates, so the opening cuts between rooms rather than craning through them: a camera crossing a gate at vault height spends the crossing inside the wall. ## Sound `Stage.bellPcm(seconds, fundamental)` · `Stage.dreadPcm(seconds)` · `Stage.liftPcm(seconds)` return interleaved mono f32 at `Stage.SAMPLE_RATE`. `Stage.CLIPS` is the order the component bakes them in. The bell is built the way a bell sounds: a hum an octave under the prime, a minor third above it, and a strike transient of noise at the head.
