What it does

Kit

The design system every screen in THE EIGHTH KETYL is drawn with: one palette taken from Still.palette, one type ramp on two faces, one set of box recipes, and the drawn art the game's cards are built around.

Why it exists. Six agents authored this world at once. A screen looks like part of the same object as the last one only if the colour, the type, the corner radius, the hairline and the panel recipe all come from one place. This is that place.

The unit. Everything is measured in Kit.sz(frac) — a fraction of the SHORTER screen edge, read live. There is no pixel constant in any screen: the game is published to a phone held either way, a laptop, a wide monitor and a television at once, and the filmed shape is 1080x1440. Kit.screen() is the one accessor that answers "what shape is the frame", and Kit.setPreviewSize(w, h) makes it answer something else for a moment — how a portrait build gets checked against a television without a second engine.

The two faces mean different things. Kit.SERIF (EBGaramond) is the laboratory's own voice — titles, the chemist, prose. Kit.MONO (JetBrainsMono) is the instrument's — readouts, numbers, labels. A UI label selects a face by the .font ASSET name; the shaper family name renders as the default sans.

What it provides

  • Kit.c, Kit.alpha(hex, a), Kit.surface — the palette and the dark-UI surfaces, which read from a step in lightness and a lit top edge rather than from a black shadow.
  • Kit.serif(frac, color, extra) / Kit.mono(...) — the type ramp.
  • Kit.label / Kit.para / Kit.col / Kit.row / Kit.gap / Kit.svg / Kit.rule — the box vocabulary.
  • Kit.panelStyle(extra) — the recessed instrument panel every card sits on.
  • Kit.backdropStyle(tint, scrim) / Kit.vignette() — the sealed interior a menu is drawn against; a scrim below 1 leaves the held game visible behind.
  • Kit.columnArt(opts) — the still in elevation: eight plates, brass rims, mucus on the glass, and the ketyl on the plate it is standing on. The title card, both end cards and the storefront all use it.
  • Kit.ketylMark(tint) / Kit.blennomaMark(alive) — the game's monogram and a single mucous lobe.
  • Kit.keycap / Kit.padcap / Kit.touchcap — a key, a pad button and a thumb, so a control is shown on all three device families rather than named on one.
  • Kit.meter(opts) — a labelled instrument meter with a segmented bar.

Who consumes it

ui.Menus, ui.Hud and the Screens component. Nothing outside the presentation slice depends on it, and it depends on nothing but Still.

conforms to

zero/source-extract/v2

Kit — the design system of THE EIGHTH KETYL's screens. One palette, one type ramp, one set of box recipes and one library of drawn art, so every screen in the game is recognisably the same object: a Victorian laboratory instrument seen in the dark, lit by the thing inside it. EVERY size here is a fraction of the shorter screen edge (Still.sz), never a pixel chosen for one viewport. The game ships to a phone held either way, a laptop, a wide monitor and a television at once. local Kit = require("ui.Kit") Kit.label("PLATE", Kit.mono(Still.type.label, Kit.c.brassLit))

setPreviewSize(w: number?, h: number?) → void

Lay every screen out as though the frame were this shape. Pass nothing to go back to the real one. An authoring affordance: nothing in the game sets it.

argtypedescription
wnumber? The pretended width in logical points, or nil.
hnumber?The pretended height.

examples

Kit.setPreviewSize(1600, 900)

screen( ) →

The frame every layout measures itself against.

sz(frac: number) → number

A fraction of the SHORTER screen edge, in logical points. The one unit every screen in this game is built from.

argtypedescription
fracnumberThe fraction, e.g. Still.type.body.

portrait( ) → boolean

Whether the frame is taller than it is wide. The two cards that reflow rather than scale ask this.

alpha(hex: string, a: number) → string

Turn a "#rrggbb" from the palette into an "rgba(...)" at the given alpha.

argtypedescription
hexstringA six-digit hex colour string.
anumberAlpha, 0..1.

examples

Kit.alpha(Kit.c.ketyl, 0.25)

serif(frac: number, color: string, extra: { [string]: any }?) →

A serif style at a fraction of the shorter screen edge.

argtypedescription
fracnumberA Still.type fraction.
colorstringThe text colour.
extra{ [string]: any }?Extra style keys merged over the result.

mono(frac: number, color: string, extra: { [string]: any }?) →

A monospace style at a fraction of the shorter screen edge.

argtypedescription
fracnumberA Still.type fraction.
colorstringThe text colour.
extra{ [string]: any }?Extra style keys merged over the result.

label(text: string, style: { [string]: any }?) →

A text node.

argtypedescription
textstringThe string to show.
style{ [string]: any }?Its style table.

para(text: string, style: { [string]: any }?) →

A wrapping paragraph. Put the width on the container, never on this node.

argtypedescription
textstringThe string to show.
style{ [string]: any }?Its style table.

col(style: { [string]: any }?, children: { any }?) →

A vertical flex box.

argtypedescription
style{ [string]: any }?Its style table.
children{ any }?Its children.

row(style: { [string]: any }?, children: { any }?) →

A horizontal flex box.

argtypedescription
style{ [string]: any }?Its style table.
children{ any }?Its children.

gap(weight: number?) →

A box that eats the free space between its siblings.

argtypedescription
weightnumber? How much of the free space, relative to other gaps.

svg(markup: string, style: { [string]: any }?) →

An inline SVG node.

argtypedescription
markupstringThe SVG document string.
style{ [string]: any }?Its style table.

rule(color: string?) →

A hairline brass rule, the width of its parent.

argtypedescription
colorstring?Its colour.

panelStyle(extra: { [string]: any }?) →

The recessed instrument panel every card in this game is drawn on.

argtypedescription
extra{ [string]: any }?Extra style keys merged over the result.

backdropStyle(tint: string?, scrim: number?) →

The full-bleed background every menu screen sits on.

argtypedescription
tintstring? The colour of the glow rising from the bottom of the frame.
scrimnumber? How opaque the ground is, 0..1. A card that REPLACES the game takes 1; a card laid OVER a held game takes less, so the still is still there behind it.

vignette( ) →

A vignette laid over a screen so the corners fall into the dark.

plateY(n: number) → number

argtypedescription
nnumber

put(s: string) → void

argtypedescription
sstring

ketylMark(tint: string?) → string

The radical's own mark — a ring with one unpaired electron on it. The game's monogram.

argtypedescription
tintstring? The colour of the electron and its halo.

blennomaMark(alive: boolean) → string

A single mucous lobe, weeping. Used as a pip in the growth counter and in the how-to card.

argtypedescription
alivebooleanWhether it is still on the glass.

keycap(legend: string) →

A keyboard key cap.

argtypedescription
legendstringWhat is printed on it.

padcap(legend: string) →

A gamepad face button, drawn round the way a pad prints it. It grows into a pill for a long legend, because a connected pad answers "Cross" as readily as "A".

argtypedescription
legendstringThe legend the connected pad uses — resolve it, do not assume A.

touchcap(legend: string) →

A touch target — a fingerprint ring, for the on-screen control the input maps put up.

argtypedescription
legendstringA one- or two-character hint.

# Still One-paragraph description of what this module provides and who consumes it. ## Exports - `M.exampleFn(arg) -> result` — what it does and when to call it. - `M.exampleValue: type` — what value it carries. ## Usage Replace `<identity>` with the string `asset.create` returned — this module's source path with `/` written as `.` and each segment's type suffix dropped, the way a module at `/source/lib/thing.module` is `lib.thing` and one at `/source/kit.package/thing.module` is `kit.thing`. ```luau local M = require("<identity>") M.exampleFn("foo") ``` ## Notes - Anything callers need to know about THIS module: required runtime ordering, state ownership, side effects.
