What it does

secondsun.shore — the place

Stage 1 of THE SECOND SUN. The tidal flat, the lagoon, the sea and its drawdown and return, and everything standing on the ground.

local Shore = require("secondsun.shore")

Shore.tick(t, dt, frame) -- the director calls this; nobody else does
Shore.waterlineZ(sea) -- world Z the sea's edge stands at for a sea level
Shore.groundY(z) -- ground height along the centreline, in metres
Shore.trees()              -- every standing conifer: { x, y, z, scale, lag }
Shore.ready() -- whether the shore is standing yet

What it owns

the grounda 4 km square .terrainData raster at 5 m per cell: one 0.92 % seaward grade, a backshore rise the forest stands on, the land behind it, two octaves of relief, a sand bar and a drainage channel
the seaone Ocean (preset moonlit), its level driven from Film.seaLevel(t) and nothing else
the wet bandthe mirror-wet mud the retreating edge has just uncovered
the borethe wall the sea comes back as, riding the waterline the sea level puts there
what stands on it700 conifers, 110 coral heads, 70 driftwood logs, 26 ash rafts, 9 ripple rings, 48 outflow flecks, 12 trunks on the bore

Everything hangs off shore_root, a temporary child of the Shore anchor — the stage rebuilds itself from this module on every load, so a saved copy would come back beside the rebuilt one and the stand would double every session.

The one number

Film.seaLevel(t) is the only water fact this stage takes from outside itself. Where the waterline stands, where the wet band lies, how much of the channel is still running out and where the bore rides are all derived from it against the ground's own measured profile — sampled off the standing raster at build, not computed from the arithmetic that made it.

What another stage can read

Shore.trees() is the standing conifer edge, so the treefall front at BLAST can be driven without a second forest being placed. Shore.waterlineZ(sea) and Shore.groundY(z) answer where the ground and the edge of the sea are on any frame.

Notes for whoever touches this next

  • A terrain.ramp holds its end heights past both ends of its segment, over its whole width. Three of them chained along one axis do not make a piecewise profile — the last one wins over the entire raster. The grade here is one ramp over the whole rect; the backshore and the land behind it are terrain.ridge additions, and the channel's min cut is masked to the distance from its own centreline so it does not run on north as a trench through the forest.
  • The Ocean module's colour fields are parsed from CSS-style strings, not from { r, g, b } triples.
  • An Ocean outlives the entity that carried it, so clearShore releases every standing ocean by hand before it despawns anything.
  • The sea's level is written straight onto the ocean instance. configure merges a seaLevel into the config but the surface, the shoaling and the underwater effect all read the instance's own field, which only attach ever sets.

TerrainOceanModel

gradeHeight(z: number) → number

The bare seaward grade. The terrain graph is cut against this, and it is the fallback for anything that has to answer before the ground is standing.

profileIndex(z: number) → number

argtypedescription
znumber

groundY(z: number) → number

Ground height at a world Z along the film's centreline, in metres.

argtypedescription
znumberWorld Z.

waterlineZ(sea: number) → number

World Z the waterline stands at for a given sea level — the film's one geometric fact about where the edge of the sea is. Solved against the ground that was actually baked.

argtypedescription
seanumberSea level in world metres, from `Film.seaLevel(t)`.

hash01(a: number, b: number) → number

No wall clock and no engine RNG: the same index lays the same thing in the same place on every run, so a rebuild and an adopt agree about the shore.

argtypedescription
anumber
bnumber

channelAt(u: number) → void

A point along the drainage channel's centreline, and its bed height there. `u` runs 0 at the head, in the lagoon, to 1 where it reaches deep water.

argtypedescription
unumber

channelDrainedTo(level: number) → number

How far down the channel the bed still stands above the sea — the length that is still running out. Past it the channel is simply submerged.

argtypedescription
levelnumber

mix3(a: { number }, b: { number }, u: number) → void

argtypedescription
a{ number }
b{ number }
unumber

hex(c: { number }) → string

The ocean's colour fields are parsed from CSS-style strings, so a colour on its way into a sea state is spelled rather than passed as three numbers.

treeAt(i: number) → void

The conifer band. Squared distribution so the edge at the backshore crest is dense and the stand thins going inland.

cookTerrain( ) → any

══ BUILD ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ A `terrain.ramp` grades the strip between its two points AND holds those end heights everywhere past them, over its whole width — so chaining three of them along one axis does not make a piecewise profile, it makes the last one win over the entire raster. The grade is therefore ONE ramp over the whole rect, and the backshore and the land behind it are ridges added onto it.

cookProps( ) → void

One low-poly conifer, one reef knoll, one log and one ripple ring — written once and referenced by every entity that stands one up.

measureProfile( ) → void

Read the standing landscape's centreline once. Everything that has to know where the ground is — the waterline, the wet band, the bore — reads this rather than the arithmetic that produced it.

deriveTrees(ids: { string }) → void

Re-derive the tree table from the standing forest: the placement is a pure function of the index and the ground is the same ground, so this reproduces exactly what the build wrote.

argtypedescription
ids{ string }

adopt( ) → boolean

A shore that is already standing. Everything is found by name, because names are what survive this module being reloaded out from under its own state.

argtypedescription
tnumber
levelnumber

driveOutflow(t: number, level: number) → void

The outflow: broken water running down the drainage channel. The run gets SHORTER as the sea falls past the channel's mouth, so the shot reads the flat emptying rather than a river that was always there.

# SecondSunShore (terrainData) A landscape covering 4000 x 4000 m: the heightfield, the weight maps that say which surface covers where, and the table of what those surfaces are — held together as one asset. A `Terrain` component references this and stands an entity on it. Fill it from a procgen graph with `terrain.write`, which writes the manifest and every child texture in one step.
