What it does

flui

The look of First Light: Vagant's screens, in one module. flscreens builds the trees; this builds the pieces they are made of.

local flui = require("ui.flui")

Measure — nothing here is a pixel

Every size is a fraction of the live short screen axis, so the same tree composes on a phone held upright, on a laptop, and on a television.

CallWhat it answers
flui.size()the shape being laid out against
flui.u(f)f of the short axis, in logical points
flui.portrait()is the screen taller than it is wide
flui.cardWidth()how wide a reading column should be
flui.typeSize(scale)a type size, never below its floor

flui.T is the type scale as fractions; flui.TMIN is the floor in logical points beside it, because a reader's eye does not shrink with the screen — on a 390-point phone the fractions alone would land body text at 9 points. flui.TAP (48) is the smallest a thing a finger presses may be.

flui.previewSize lays a build out against a stated shape instead of the live one. Set it, build a tree, read the numbers back, clear it: that is how screens authored in a tall frame are proved to hold in a wide one.

flui.previewSize = { width = 1920, height = 1080 }
local tree = require("ui.flscreens").title(model)
flui.previewSize = nil

Colour

flui.C carries fl.PAL's four UI hexes plus this slice's own, derived from the same palette the fen and the lantern are painted from: ink paper brass blood, the panel steps soot slate iron fog, the light flame lamp dawn, jasey white, water, and the parchment set vellum / vellumEdge / vellumInk.

Pieces

  • Type — flui.text(str, scale, style), flui.para(str, scale, style) (a paragraph always ships inside a full-width box of its own; a wrapping label that carries its own width collapses to one glyph per line), and flui.eyebrow(str, color) for the letterspaced cap line over a heading.
  • Ornament — flui.rule(opts) (a hairline with a diamond set in it), flui.diamond(size, color), flui.svg(str, w, h, style).
  • Surfaces — flui.plate(children, style) for a panel on the dark page, flui.vellum(children, style) for a printed card, flui.scrim(children, style) for the ground a card sits on.
  • Controls — flui.item(opts) is the one menu line: a plate at thumb size carrying its own handler, with a brass ring, a lit edge marker and a diamond when focused. flui.cap(str, kind) draws a keycap, a pad button or a touch target as the thing it is.
  • Glyphs — flui.lampGlyph(lit, height, onLight), flui.wigGlyph(color, height), flui.pauseGlyph(color, size), flui.sunGlyph(color, size).

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

conforms to

zero/source-extract/v2

flui — the design system for FIRST LIGHT: VAGANT's authored screens. Owned by the `screens` slice. Everything visual that more than one screen needs lives here: the palette in its hex form, the type scale, the ornaments, the plates, the focus ring, and the device glyphs. Nothing here registers a screen or reads game state — it builds nodes and returns them. EVERY size in here is a fraction of the SHORT screen axis (fl.u), so the same tree composes at 1080x1440, at 1920x1080 and on a phone held either way. No pixel constant is written anywhere in this slice.

hex(rgb: { number }) → string

Colour. fl.PAL holds the four UI hexes the whole game agrees on; the rest are this slice's own, derived from fl.PAL's linear triples so the screens and the fen are painted out of one box of paint.

size( ) → void

u(f: number) → number

portrait( ) → boolean

cardWidth( ) → string | number

The width a reading column should be, as a percentage string. A tall frame gives the card almost the whole width; a wide one holds it to a column so a line of type never runs the width of a television.

typeSize(scale: ?) → number

text(str: string, scale: ?, style: ?) → void

A line of type. `scale` is a key of flui.T or a raw fraction.

para(str: string, scale: ?, style: ?) → void

A paragraph. A wrapping label carrying its own width collapses to one glyph per line, and a label inside a centre-aligned column has no width to wrap against at all — so a paragraph always ships inside a full-width box of its own, and centres its text with `textAlign` rather than with the parent.

eyebrow(str: string, color: string?, style: ?) → void

The small letterspaced cap line that sits over a heading. Georgian printers set their standing matter this way and it is the cheapest way to make a screen look composed rather than typed.

A hairline with a diamond set in it — the rule under every heading.

Plates. Depth on a near-black UI comes from a step in lightness plus a lit top edge — a black drop shadow over black is invisible.

vellum(children: ?, style: ?) → void

A printed card: the how-to broadsheet and the minute-book entry. Aged paper, foxed at the corners, a double rule inside the edge.

scrim(children: ?, style: ?) → void

The scrim a card sits on. Translucent, so the fen is still behind it.

item(opts: ?) → void

Controls. Every one of these is a real tap target: the smallest is u(0.072) on its short side, which is 78 logical points at 1080 — well over a thumb's 44. The one control shape every menu uses. `focused` draws the brass ring the controller needs; hover and press are styled for the pointer; the whole box carries the onClick so a thumb hits the plate, not the word.

A keycap, a pad button and a touch target, drawn as the thing they are.

lampGlyph(lit: boolean, height: number, onLight: boolean?) → void

One of the seven standards. Unlit it is a cold outline; lit it carries a flame and a halo, which is the whole reading of the HUD at a glance. `onLight` draws the unlit standard in ink instead of in pale iron, for the parchment cards — a light stroke on paper is not a drawing, it is a blank.

⌬ Metadata
descriptionThe design system behind every authored screen in First Light: Vagant — the palette in its hex form, an EB Garamond type scale with a legibility floor, the ornaments and rules, the dark-UI plates and the parchment card, the focus-ring menu control, keycap/pad/touch chips, and the lamp-standard, wig, pause and sun glyphs as inline SVG. Every measurement is a fraction of the LIVE short screen axis, so one tree composes at 3:4, at 16:9 and on a phone held either way; `previewSize` lets a build be laid out against another shape and read back without a second engine.

# fl One-paragraph description of what this module provides and who consumes it. ## Exports - `M.exampleFn(arg) -> result` — what it does and when to call it. - `M.exampleValue: type` — what value it carries. ## Usage Replace `<identity>` with the string `asset.create` returned — this module's source path with `/` written as `.` and each segment's type suffix dropped, the way a module at `/source/lib/thing.module` is `lib.thing` and one at `/source/kit.package/thing.module` is `kit.thing`. ```luau local M = require("<identity>") M.exampleFn("foo") ``` ## Notes - Anything callers need to know about THIS module: required runtime ordering, state ownership, side effects.
