What it does

Director

The referee of GREASEPAINT. One of these sits on the scene's Director anchor and owns Core.state() — it is the only thing that writes the phase, the deck, the hand, Nerve, Breath, Block, Laughter and the clown. Everything else reads that state, listens on the Core bus, and asks for changes through Core.cmd.

It needs no sibling components. It reaches the ring through entity.find(Core.ANCHORS.clown) and the figures through game.clowns.Roster, both looked up when the act starts, so a night still runs when either is still being built.

Public fields

  • autoStart: boolean — start a night the moment play begins instead of waiting on the title card. A testing convenience; false in the game.
  • beatScale: number — multiplier on every staged pause the Director holds: the opening, the pause after a death, the breath between turns. 1 is the played tempo. 0 collapses them to a single frame, which is how selfplay.luau plays a whole night without waiting.

The night

title → howto? → intro → four acts of (battle → reward) → won or lost, with pause reachable from battle, reward and the opening.

Acts I–III are the three clowns of Core.RUN.pool in a shuffled order; act IV is Mr. Marrow. Nerve, the Laughter meter and the card library carry across acts; Block, the piles and the turn count are rebuilt for each one.

A turn is: draw five, spend three Breath, End Turn, the clown acts on the intent it telegraphed. Ada's Block clears at the start of her next turn and a clown's clears the moment it acts again, so neither can be stacked across turns. Sawdust halves the clown's next blow and Mirror sends it back — both stay armed until a blow actually lands on them.

End Turn is taken once. From the press until the next hand is dealt the Director is busy: a second endTurn, and any playCard, is refused, and the beat that resolves the clown is the only thing that gives the turn back.

Every Grin still in the hand when the turn ends costs a Nerve — one ada.hit { source = "grin" } carrying the total — before the clown acts.

When Laughter reaches 100 the tent laughs: one card in the library is painted into a Grin, in the working piles as well so it is felt this act. The first laugh of a night empties the meter; every laugh after leaves RULES.LAUGHTER_CARRY standing. Each laugh also warms the house a step, to RULES.HEAT_MAX, emitting tent.heat { level } on the rise and speaking Core.BARKER.heat[level]; the house never cools before morning. At every step, laughter the clowns raise is worth RULES.HEAT_LAUGHTER more — laughter Ada takes back off the meter is worth what it says, because the heat is the tent's advantage and not a tax on her answer to it.

Grins are unplayable and each one sitting in the hand raises Laughter every turn. Match burns one out of the deck for good — and while the deck holds a Grin and nothing that burns one, every reward offer includes a Match, because a deck the player cannot clean is a dead end rather than a difficulty. A card with exhaust set — Match, Curtsey — leaves the act when it is played instead of going to the discard.

The interval

reward.offer carries next, the clown of the coming act, and mode:

  • "take" — three cards out of RULES.REWARD_POOL, with the Match guarantee above. Picking adds one to the library.
  • "leave" — at RULES.LEAVE_ACT, three cards out of Ada's OWN library. Picking removes the first entry equal to it, Grins included.

pickReward { index = 0 } declines in either mode — TAKE NOTHING, KEEP THEM ALL — and emits reward.picked { card = nil, mode }. Either way the next act begins.

Commands it answers

startRun, howto, back, playCard {index?}, focusCard {index | delta}, endTurn, pickReward {index?}, pause, resume, restart, quitToTitle.

Each is refused from a phase that does not expect it, so a stray command cannot park a night: howto opens only from the title and the pause card, pause only from an act, a reward or the opening, and no card is played while the game is on a card of its own.

playCard and pickReward fall back to the focused index when given none, so one control serves a click on a card, a tap on it, and a pad's south button on the focused one. focusCard takes an absolute index from a mouse or a touch and a relative delta from a stick or the arrow keys, wrapping at both ends.

Events it emits

Every name in Core.EVENTS. phase.changed on each transition; run.start / run.won / run.lost; act.start / act.won; turn.start / turn.end; card.drawn / card.played / card.painted / card.burned; clown.intent / clown.hit / clown.blocked / clown.guard / clown.attack / clown.laugh / clown.die; ada.hit / ada.heal; laughter.changed / tent.laughs / tent.heat; reward.offer / reward.picked; focus.changed.

ada.hit carries source — "clown" for a blow, "grin" for the bite. clown.laugh's delta is what the meter TOOK, which in a warm house is more than the clown asked for.

A card is resolved in state the instant it is played and its events go out immediately after — nothing here waits on an animation. voice.line is the one event it shares: the sound slice speaks the line and emits it with the clip's real duration, and if nothing has answered within a beat the Director emits the line itself, so the words always reach the subtitle strip even when a generation failed.

Lifecycle

  • awake() — subscribes to every command, tagged, so a hot reload replaces its handlers instead of doubling them.
  • start() — starts a night if autoStart is set.
  • update(dt) — counts down the staged beats. They do not run while the game is on the pause card.
  • onDestroy() — unsubscribes, drops pending beats, despawns the clown.

Usage

local Core = require("game.Core")
Core.cmd("startRun")
Core.on("act.start", function(p) print("act", p.act, p.clown) end)

selfplay.luau, beside this component, plays whole nights through those commands alone and reports what fired. It carries two harnesses:

execute { file = ".../selfplay.luau" } -- three scripted nights
execute { file = ".../selfplay.luau", args = { mode = "greedy", nights = 12 } }

The scripted run is the regression: it walks the console cold, plays a night to a win, one sat out to a loss and one played for laughs until a Grin burns, checks that a restart leaves a clean night, and reports missing: [] when every name in Core.EVENTS fired. The greedy run is the exchange rate's measuring stick — a player who reads only the numbers, N nights over, with the win count, the paints a night, the heat and the highest guard any clown ever stood behind. It drops and replays a night the shared engine interfered with rather than averaging it in. Both restore beatScale and leave the game on the title card.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

conforms to

zero/source-extract/v2

game.rules.Director — the referee of GREASEPAINT. Mounted once on the scene's `Director` anchor. Owns Core.state(): it is the only thing that writes the phase, the deck, the hand, Nerve, Breath, Laughter and the clown. Every other slice reads the state and listens on the Core bus; it drives this component only through Core.cmd(...). The night runs: title → howto? → intro → four acts of (battle → reward) → won or lost. A card is resolved in state the instant it is played and the event goes out immediately after; nothing here waits on an animation except the beats below, which exist so the staging has room to play.

after(seconds: number, fn: ?) → void

Hold `fn` for `seconds` of staged time. Scaled by beatScale, so a script can flatten the whole night's pacing to a frame.

argtypedescription
secondsnumber
fn?

afterReal(seconds: number, fn: ?) → void

Hold `fn` for real seconds, whatever the tempo. The voice fallback uses this so it always gives the sound slice the same window to answer in.

argtypedescription
secondsnumber
fn?

clearTimers( ) → void

speak(speaker: string, text: string?) → void

Say a line. The sound slice owns generated speech and emits `voice.line` with the clip's real duration; this waits a beat for it and, if nothing answered, emits the line itself so the words still reach the subtitle strip. A line is never lost because a generation failed.

setPhase(phase: string) → void

argtypedescription

react(event: string) → void

argtypedescription
eventstring

despawnClown( ) → void

retireStandin( ) → void

The ring's stand-in. It was the placeholder the ring held before the four figures existed; now that they walk on themselves it stays down, and between acts the sawdust is empty under the lamp — which is what the card between two acts says it is.

cancelSpawn( ) → void

spawnClown(id: string) → void

libraryIndexOf(id: string) → number

argtypedescription

replaceInPiles(oldId: string, newId: string?) → void

Take one card out of whichever working pile currently holds it, so a paint or a burn is felt this act and not only on the next shuffle.

newIdstring?

paintACard( ) → void

The tent laughs: it reaches into the deck and paints one of Ada's cards into a Grin. The first laugh of a night empties the meter; every one after leaves the carry standing, because a house that has laughed once does not go quiet again. Each laugh warms the house by a step, and Mr. Marrow marks the step from the dark.

addLaughter(delta: number) → number

Laughter the clowns raise is worth more the warmer the house is. Laughter Ada takes back off the meter is worth what it says: the heat is the tent's advantage, not a tax on her own answer to it.

resolveClown( ) → void

endTurn( ) → boolean

Ending the turn hands the ring over for a beat. `busy` holds it there: the End Turn plate is taken once, and nothing Ada does lands while the clown is acting. The beat's own continuation is the only thing that gives it back.

defeatClown( ) → void

offerFromPool( ) → void

Three cards out of the reward pool, and a Match whenever the deck holds a Grin she has no way to burn. A deck the player cannot clean is a dead end, not a difficulty.

offerFromLibrary( ) → void

Three cards out of Ada's own deck, for the interval that takes one away.

offerReward( ) → void

pickReward(index: number?) → boolean

Index 0 declines — TAKE NOTHING under the three cards, KEEP THEM ALL under the three she would be leaving behind. Either way the act begins.

# game.clowns.Roster The four faces of GREASEPAINT. Everything the Director needs from the clowns slice goes through here. ```luau local Roster = require("game.clowns.Roster") local clown = Roster.spawn("pinch", entity.find("ClownMark")) clown:react("enter") clown:despawn() ``` ## Exports - `Roster.kinds() -> { string }` — `pinch`, `bello`, `slats`, `marrow`. - `Roster.spawn(kind, at) -> handle` — build the figure under `at` and mount its driver. The handle carries `kind`, `root`, `dims`, `parts`, and answers `:react(event)` and `:despawn()`. It **yields**: the figure assembles over several frames, so call it from a coroutine. The handle comes back once the figure is whole. - `handle:react(event)` — `enter`, `idle`, `attack`, `hit`, `guard`, `laugh`, `die`. `guard` and `die` hold until the next reaction; `die` holds for good. - `handle:despawn()` — take the whole figure away. - `Roster.prewarm(kind?) -> task` — warm a kind ahead of its entrance. No `kind` warms all four. - `Roster.stopPrewarm()` — cancel a warm-up still running. - `Roster.retireStandin()` — the scene's stand-in steps down. ## Authoring probes Not on any gameplay path — these exist so an author working in a live engine can ask the roster what it currently believes: - `Roster.kinds()` — the ids it can build. - `Roster.warmed(kind) -> boolean` — will this entrance cost a frame, or a fifth of a second? - `Roster.painted(kind) -> boolean` — has the generated paint landed on the materials yet? - `Roster.lastSpawn()` — what the last assembly cost: `{ kind, totalMs, frames, worstFrameMs, warm }`. The answer to "was that entrance a hitch?" without reading a frame graph. - `Roster.probe()` — what it reads a design as, held against a fresh read of the module: the answer to "did my edit reach the running roster?". - `Roster.clear()` — every clown down, whoever spawned it. - `Roster.flush()` — drop every cached figure, mesh, handle and paint and re-read the designs. For an author editing `game.clowns.figures` live. ## Notes - The greasepaint and the cloth are generated (`game.clowns.paint`), which costs a second or two of CPU per clown. That work runs chunked in a background task and binds its textures into the kind's materials when it lands, so a spawn never blocks a frame and a figure is never missing. A kind is generated once per session and then lives on the materials. - A mesh handle is cheap to make and expensive to DRAW for the first time. The warm-up therefore attaches each of a kind's handles to a throwaway entity far under the tent and takes it away again, a frame's worth at a time; a cold figure costs about 200 ms in one frame, a warm one about 11. The first mount of the `Clown` driver is warmed the same way, once. - `spawn` retires the scene's `clown_standin` and assembles the figure well below the mark, then sets it down whole — nothing is ever seen half-built. - Spawning a kind sweeps any figure of that kind already standing, by name, so a hot reload cannot leave two of one clown in the ring.

# Core The one table every part of GREASEPAINT reads. It carries the game's constants — the cards, the four clowns, the barker's lines, the palette and the fonts — the live state of the night, and the event bus the game talks over. Every other module requires this and nothing else of each other. `game.rules.Director` is the **only** writer of `Core.state()`. Everything else reads the state, listens on the bus, and asks the Director for changes through `Core.cmd`. ```luau local Core = require("game.Core") Core.state().nerve -- read the night Core.on("clown.hit", function(p) ... end) -- react to it Core.cmd("playCard", { index = 2 }) -- ask the Director to act ``` ## Constants - `Core.RULES` — Nerve, Breath, hand size, the Laughter ceiling and where the meter carries to after a laugh, how warm the house can get and what a step of heat is worth, what a held Grin bites, how many acts a night runs, which act's interval takes a card away instead of giving one, the starter deck and the reward pool. - `Core.CARDS` — the twelve cards, each with `kind` (`gag` / `guard` / `trick` / `curse`), `cost`, and whatever it does: `dmg`, `block`, `heal`, `laughter`, `effect` (`weaken` / `reflect` / `burn`), `exhaust` when playing it takes it out of the act, and the `text` its face prints. - `Core.CLOWNS` — Pinch, Bello, Slats and Mr. Marrow: `hp`, a looping `pattern` of intents, and three spoken `lines` (`enter`, `laugh`, `die`). - `Core.RUN` — the three-clown pool and the finale. - `Core.BARKER` — the Ringmaster's four narrated lines, and `heat`, the one he marks each step of the warming house with. - `Core.PALETTE` / `Core.FONTS` / `Core.ANCHORS` / `Core.SEAT` / `Core.PHASES` / `Core.EVENTS` / `Core.COMMANDS`. ## State - `Core.state()` — the live night. Phase, act, turn, Nerve, Breath, Block, Laughter, the `heat` the house has reached, the `library` (every card the night owns) and the working piles drawn from it (`deck`, `hand`, `discard`, `exhaust`), the current `clown`, the `reward` on offer — its `cards`, the `next` clown it names and its `mode` (`take` or `leave`) — the focused index, and the `order` the four acts run in. - `Core.reset()` — replaces the state with a fresh night, in place, so a reference held across a restart stays valid. ## The bus - `Core.on(name, fn, tag?) -> unsubscribe` — subscribe. A `tag` makes it idempotent: registering the same event and tag again replaces the earlier subscription rather than stacking a second copy, which is what keeps a reloaded component from handling everything twice. - `Core.off(name, tag)` — drop a tagged subscription. - `Core.emit(name, payload)` — fire to every subscriber, in order. A listener that errors is reported and the rest still run. - `Core.cmd(name, payload)` — `Core.emit("cmd." .. name, payload)`. - `Core.listenerCount(name)`, `Core.clearListeners()`. ## Chance The night's randomness is one stream, seeded per run, so a seed replays a whole night: the act order, the shuffles, which card the tent paints, which three cards a reward offers. - `Core.random()` — the next value in [0, 1). - `Core.randomIndex(n)` — an integer in [1, n]. - `Core.shuffle(list)` — shuffle in place, return the list. - `Core.rand(salt)` — a stable value for a salt, independent of the stream. ## The frame Every screen, plate and card lays out from the live frame, so any shape holds. - `Core.frame(override?)` — `{ w, h, u, wide }`. `u` is a hundredth of the short side: the unit every proportion is stated in. `wide` is true from an aspect of 1.25 up. Pass `{ width, height }` to lay out against a shape the engine is not running at. - `Core.rgba(hex, a)` — a palette hex with an alpha, as the `rgba()` string a widget takes. - `Core.hairline(n)` — a rule of `n` pixels, never thinner than one whole one. ## Also - `Core.card(id)` / `Core.clown(id)` — a record, or nil. - `Core.readingTime(text)` — how long a spoken line should sit on screen, in milliseconds, when no generated clip has answered for it. Between 1.4 and 9 seconds, whatever the length.
