What it does

bake

Turns game.audio.recipes into the .soundClip assets under game/audio/clips, and re-files a generated spoken line beside them. Authoring-time only: the game ships the baked clips, so a browser session synthesises nothing on the player's machine and a hot reload does not recompute twenty seconds of drone.

local bake = require("game.audio.bake")
bake.run({ "stone_seat", "bed_night" })   -- one batch
bake.run()                                -- every recipe
bake.verify()                             -- read every clip's header back

run reports each clip's frames, peak, rms, build time and — for a loop — its seam error, the size of the step across the join measured against the steps the signal already takes. verify reads data.zaud's header off disk with audio.info: a duration of zero, one frame, or the wrong channel count is a clip that would otherwise ship silently broken.

Codecs

A loop goes out as codec = "pcm", uncompressed. It is seamless end to end, and a compressed clip loses a few milliseconds off its head on decode, which is a click at every join. A one-shot does not care and goes out as Opus, which is what keeps eleven effects and eight spoken lines under a third of a megabyte between them.

The compression choice is passed at create time. Setting it afterwards re-encodes what is already there and undoes the choice.

Speech

harvestVoice takes the .soundClip container a generation produced and re-files it as voice_<line> under this slice's own folder, so the eight lines are committed with the rest of the sound and a reload never re-buys them. Each line is generated once; game.audio.lines holds the words and the measured length of each.

Owned by the sound & voice slice.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

zero/source-extract/v2

bake — turn `game.audio.recipes` into `.soundClip` assets on disk. Authoring-time only. The game ships the baked clips, so a browser session synthesises nothing on the player's machine and a hot reload does not recompute twenty seconds of drone. local bake = require("game.audio.bake") bake.run({ "stone_seat", "bed_night" }) -- a batch bake.run() -- every recipe bake.verify() -- read every clip's header back A loop is encoded `codec = "pcm"`: an interior loop point is stored and read by nothing (#8874), and an Opus clip loses its first few milliseconds on decode (#8873), which is a click at every join. One-shots do not care, so they go out as Opus and stay small. The compression choice is passed at CREATE time — setting it afterwards re-encodes the PCM through Opus and undoes it (#8872). Owned by the `sound & voice` slice.

identity(name: string) → string

The dotted identity a baked clip answers to. `asset.create` files the asset under FOLDER and the folder becomes the identity's prefix, so this is what `asset.resolve(id, "soundClip")` takes at play time.

render(name: string) → void

Build one recipe's samples. Returns the buffer, its frame count, and the seam error (how far the last sample sits from the first — the number that says whether a loop will click).

run(names: { string }?) → void

Bake a list of recipes (or all of them) into `.soundClip` assets.

harvestVoice(sources: { [string]: string }) → void

Re-file a generated speech clip under this slice's own folder, so the line is committed with the rest of the sound and a hot reload never re-buys it. `sources` maps a line id to the `.soundClip` container `services.status` reported; the container's `source.mp3` is what gets re-encoded. Speech goes out as Opus at a speech bitrate: it is a one-shot, so losing a few milliseconds off the head on decode (#8873) costs it nothing, and the eight lines together stay under a hundred kilobytes.

document( ) → void

Write a README beside every clip — the baked ones from `ABOUT`, the spoken ones from the line itself, so a reader of the published world can tell what each clip is without playing it.

verify(names: { string }?) → void

Read every baked clip's ZAUD header back off disk. This is the proof a clip is what it was meant to be: a duration of 0, one frame, or the wrong channel count is a clip that ships silently broken.

# audio.synth Pure-CPU audio synthesis. Every noise *First Light: Vagant* makes is computed here as interleaved f32 PCM in a `buffer`, then handed to `audio.encodePcm` / `asset.create("soundClip", …)`. No network, no credits, no failure mode. Author time only — `audio.recipes` and `audio.bake` are its consumers, and the game ships the baked clips, so a browser session synthesises nothing on the player's machine. Two conventions run through it: - every generator **adds** into a destination buffer, so layers compose; - a **loop-coherent** generator takes its frequency in cycles across the WHOLE buffer rather than in hertz, which is what makes a bed seamless end to end. ## What is in it - **Oscillators** — `sine` (table-driven), `addTone` (a gliding harmonic stack with vibrato), `addLoopPartial` (the loop-coherent form), `addPluck` (Karplus-Strong), `addNoise`. - **Envelopes** — `env` (breakpoints in seconds), `decayEnv` (attack plus an exponential tail), `mulEnv`. - **Filters** — `lowpass`, `highpass`, `lowpassSweep`, `bandpass` (a swept state-variable band), and the circular forms `lowpassCircular` / `bandpassCircular`, which converge the filter's state on the wrap point so its output is continuous ACROSS the loop join. - **Space and finishing** — `reverb` (four combs into two allpasses), `resample`, `gain`, `normalize`, `softClip`, `removeDc`, `fadeEdges`, `mix`, `addWrapped` (a tail that wraps round to the head of a loop). - **Measurement** — `peak`, `rms`, and `seamError`, which reports the step across a loop's join in the units the signal itself steps in: around 1 is seamless, a click reads in the tens.

# recipes Every noise *First Light: Betocsin* makes, written down as a recipe rather than recorded: a length, a sample rate, whether it loops, and a `build` that fills a mono f32 buffer. `game.audio.bake` turns these into the `.soundClip` assets under `game/audio/clips`. Nothing here runs at play time. ## The palette The tuning is the bell's. The tocsin is cast bronze with its prime at **G3**; the tower's night bed is the same G two octaves under it, and the whole score is that drone with a **third** in it — B flat while it is night, B natural once the sky pales. `bed_night` and `bed_dawn` are the same twenty seconds, the same drone and the same fifth, differing by that one semitone, so crossfading between them *is* the dawn. Everything is low, wet and far off. An estuary at four in the morning is a room with a mile of fog in it, so nothing is dry and nothing is bright until the bell itself is struck. ## The clips | | | |---|---| | `ui_move` `ui_confirm` `ui_back` `ui_pause` | the console: paper, brass and a struck note | | `stone_seat` | a course set down; pitched per course by the Sound component | | `perfect_chime` | bronze agreeing with the stone | | `offcut_fall` | the shear, the air, and a soft landing far below | | `tocsin_toll` | the fallen bell, once, from under the fog | | `hoist_creak` | hemp under load and a timber jib taking the weight | | `bell_peal` | the tocsin rung — three strikes, the sound the game is for | | `collapse` | stone leaving stone, then everything at once | | `amb_fog` | air over a mile of flat water, with slate and rigging in the top | | `bed_night` `bed_dawn` | the drone, minor third and major | ## Loops A loop is built to join to **itself**: held notes are a whole number of cycles across the buffer, noise beds are filtered circularly, and a struck note's tail is wrapped round to the head. Interior loop points are stored and read by nothing, so a bed that does not already join is a bed that clicks. `synth.seamError` measures the join in the units the signal steps in — around one is seamless. Owned by the sound & voice slice. The synthesis primitives are `deps/…/audio/synth`, installed from ZeroMind.

# lines Everything the Warden says, and when. He is the old bell-warden you have replaced tonight — gruff, close, out of patience — and he says eight things across a round and nothing else. | cue | the line | |---|---| | `opening` | *Tower's down. Fleet's in the fog. Raise it, and ring it, before the light does.* | | `watch` | *First watch. Keep them true.* | | `blush` | *Sky's paling. Faster.* | | `hoist` | *That'll hold. Bring her up.* | | `ring` | *Now. Ring it.* | | `won` | *They're awake. Let them come.* | | `fell` | *Stone's in the water. So are we.* | | `sunrise` | *Light's on the water. Too late.* | ## The written form ships Every line carries its text as well as its clip, and the text is what the game is guaranteed to say: `Sound` emits `caption(text, seconds)` for each one whether or not its audio answered. A line whose clip is missing, or whose player has the sound off, or who is somewhere they cannot listen, is a **quiet** line rather than a lost one. `seconds` is how long the caption holds — the reading plus a beat, and never less than it takes to read four words off a phone held at arm's length. ## `clipSeconds` The spoken line's real length, read off the baked clip with `audio.info` and written down here rather than asked for at play time: `Audio:duration()` answers for the clip the mixer is already holding, so in the frame a line is cued it still reports the length of the line before it. ## `urgent` An urgent line is delivered the moment it is cued, over anything already speaking, because by the time it is late it is wrong — the opening, the hoist, the ring, and each of the three endings. Anything else waits its turn. Owned by the sound & voice slice; the caption strip that prints these is the presentation slice's.
