What it does

film

The shared clock, the storm and the slice registry for Sexton's Bell — the 95-second, 14-shot demo in this world. Every build slice requires this module; it is the only place the film's time, weather, palette and storm table are written down.

Exports

  • film.FPS / film.DT / film.DURATION / film.FRAMES — 24, 1/24, 95.0, 2280.
  • film.now() / film.frame() / film.isPlaying() — where the film is.
  • film.seekTo(t) / film.seekToFrame(n) / film.reset() / film.play() / film.pause() / film.run() / film.step() — the transport. step() is called once per rendered frame by the FilmDirector component and by nothing else.
  • film.register(slice) / film.buildAll() / film.built(name) / film.missing() / film.slices() — the registry.
  • film.SHOTS / film.shotAt(t) — the fourteen shots and their boundaries.
  • film.STROKES / film.strobe(t) / film.thunderAt(i) / film.gap(i) / film.strokeAt(t) — the storm. strobe(t) is the single lightning envelope everything reads; nobody writes their own.
  • film.rain(t) / film.wind(t) / film.windDir(t) / film.wetness(t) / film.gas(t) / film.lantern(t) — the shared weather and practical ramps.
  • film.rand(seed, i) / film.noise(seed, x) — the only randomness a slice may use.
  • film.PAL / film.NAMES / film.PLACES — palette, shared entity names, world anchors.

Usage

local film = require("demo.film")

local function update(t)
    local level, stroke = film.strobe(t)
-- ... a pure function of t, and of nothing else
end

Notes

  • Every slice's update(t) is a pure function of absolute film time. No accumulation, no dt, no math.random, no wall clock. That purity is what makes seekTo(t) reproduce a frame exactly, which is what lets the film be recorded twice for the same result.
  • Guard a slice's build() on its sentinel entity being alive, never on a module-local flag: module state survives an edit/play flip and entities do not.
  • The full design is /zero/source/design/spec.md.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

conforms to

zero/source-extract/v2

demo.film — the shared clock, the storm, and the slice registry for "Sexton's Bell" (world: Victorian Gothic Storm). THE ONE RULE: every registered slice's `update(t)` is a PURE function of absolute film time `t`. No accumulation, no `dt` integration, no `math.random`. Use `M.rand(seed, i)` for anything that must look random. Purity is what makes `M.seekTo(t)` reproduce a frame exactly, which is what lets the recording phase run the film twice and get the same film.

now( ) → void

Current film time in seconds.

frame( ) → void

Current film frame index (0-based).

isPlaying( ) → void

True while the film is advancing.

register(slice: ?) → void

Register a build/update slice. Re-registering the same name replaces it (hot reload safe).

argtypedescription
slice?

slices( ) → void

Every registered slice, in build/update order.

built(name: ?) → void

True when the slice's sentinel entity is alive. Guard build() on THIS, never on a module-local flag — module state survives an edit/play flip and the entities do not.

argtypedescription
name?

buildAll( ) → void

Build every registered slice whose sentinel entity is missing. Idempotent.

missing( ) → void

Which slices have not built (sentinel entity missing).

tick(t: ?) → void

Transport

argtypedescription
t?

seekTo(t: ?) → void

Put the film at absolute time t and paint that frame. Deterministic: the picture depends on t alone.

argtypedescription
t?

seekToFrame(n: ?) → void

Seek to frame n (0-based).

argtypedescription
n?

reset( ) → void

Rewind to 0, paint frame 0, and stay paused.

play( ) → void

Start advancing one fixed 1/24 s film frame per RENDERED frame.

pause( ) → void

Stop advancing; the current frame stays painted.

run( ) → void

Reset then play — the single "run the film from the top" verb.

step( ) → void

Advance one film frame. The FilmDirector component calls this once per rendered frame; nothing else should.

rand(seed: ?, i: ?) → void

Deterministic pseudo-random in [0,1) from an integer seed pair. The ONLY randomness allowed inside update().

argtypedescription
seed?
i?

noise(seed: ?, x: ?) → void

Smooth deterministic 1-D value noise in [-1,1], for handheld drift and flame flicker.

argtypedescription
seed?
x?

shotAt(t: ?) → void

The shot covering film time t, plus how far into it we are.

argtypedescription
t?

thunderAt(i: ?) → void

Film time at which stroke i's thunder reaches the camera.

argtypedescription
i?

gap(i: ?) → void

Flash-to-thunder gap in seconds for stroke i — the number the film is counting.

argtypedescription
i?

envelope(s: ?, age: ?) → void

argtypedescription
s?
age?

strobe(t: ?) → void

The master lightning envelope at film time t: level in 0..1 (already scaled by each stroke's lum), the dominant stroke's index, and its age in seconds.

argtypedescription
t?

strokeAt(t: ?) → void

The stroke the film is currently "on" and its age in seconds. A negative age means it has not fired yet.

argtypedescription
t?

ramp(t: ?, pts: ?) → void

Weather ramps — shared, so the rain in the frame and the rain in the soundtrack are the same rain.

argtypedescription
t?
pts?

rain(t: ?) → void

Rain intensity 0..1. Damp at the lodge gate, torrential through the strike, drizzle at the end.

argtypedescription
t?

wind(t: ?) → void

Wind speed in m/s, driving the yews, the rain shear and the door.

argtypedescription
t?

windDir(t: ?) → void

Wind bearing in degrees. Backs as the cell passes overhead.

argtypedescription
t?

wetness(t: ?) → void

Standing-water coverage 0..1 — the ground goes from damp to sheeting.

argtypedescription
t?

gas(t: ?) → void

Gas-mantle output 0..1. The mantles hunt as pressure fails, go out at the strike (t = 58.40) and never come back.

argtypedescription
t?

lantern(t: ?) → void

The paraffin lantern's output 0..1 — the only warm light that survives the strike.
