What it does

haul

The magclamp's arithmetic, and its one hard question: is this plate free?

local Haul = require("game.haul")

Mass

accelFactor(tonnes) is what cargo does to a thruster burn, and brakeFactor(tonnes) is what it does to the brake. They are the same curve, but braking is raised to a higher power, because stopping has to degrade faster than starting does. That asymmetry is the tension in the haul: you can always get moving with a plate on the clamp, and getting stopped again is the part you have to plan for.

Free plates

isFree(piece) answers whether a plate has been cut loose and can be clamped. freePieces(x, y, z) lists every free plate nearest-first, and nearestFree(x, y, z, range) is the one the clamp would take. Reach is measured to the plate's surface, not to its centre, because a plate is a three-metre slab and a clamp that measured to the middle would refuse a plate you were standing on.

The cargo maw

inMaw(x, y, z) is where tonnage banks — the volume around the skiff's dock, sized from the dock's own scale. bank(piece) takes a delivered plate out of play.

The handshake

setHeld(piece, held, vx, vy, vz) tells the plate's own drift that the clamp has it, and hands back a velocity when the clamp lets go, so a plate released mid-flight keeps the momentum it was being towed with.

Everything here is a pure function of the live world — nothing is cached between calls and no state lives in this module.

massK( ) → number

Mass — the whole feel of the game, in two numbers. `accelFactor` is what a tonne of cargo does to every thruster burn: CFG.haulMassDrag is the multiplier at exactly one tonne, and the curve through it is 1/(1 + t*k), which keeps two tonnes worse than one without ever reaching zero. `brakeFactor` is the same curve raised to 1.5, because stopping has to degrade faster than starting does. That asymmetry IS the tension: you can always get moving with a plate on the clamp, and getting stopped again is the part you have to plan for.

setHeld(piece: any, held: boolean, vx: number?, vy: number?, vz: number?) → void

The clamp handshake with `torch`. A freed plate drifts under torch's own integration. `SalvagePiece` carries a `held` flag and a velocity for exactly that: while the magclamp has the plate, `held` says so and torch leaves it alone, and letting go hands the plate the velocity it inherits from the scrapper who was towing it. Both writes are best-effort — a plate with no SalvagePiece on it still clamps, tows and banks.

halfExtent(piece: any) → number

Reach. A plate is a 3-4 m slab, so a magclamp that measured to its centre would refuse a plate the player is standing on. Reach is measured to the plate's surface, approximated by its largest half-extent.

dock( ) → any

The cargo maw — where tonnage banks. The maw's marker, or the skiff itself. Re-importing the skiff's bundle rebuilds its children and takes the marker with them, and a run whose tonnage cannot be banked is a run nobody can finish — so the skiff, which is always there, is the fallback.

inMaw(x: number, y: number, z: number) → void

Is this world point inside the skiff's cargo maw? Returns the answer and how far the point is from the maw's centre, so a caller can report it.

bank(piece: any) → void

Take a banked plate out of play: parked in the maw, switched off, and attributed so it is never a clamp candidate again. The scene owns these entities, so this slice hides one rather than despawning it.
