What it does

cloth

GPU cloth simulation system. Simulates any number of rectangular cloth sheets entirely on the GPU — Verlet integration, Jacobi constraint relaxation (structural / shear / bend springs), pin presets (top edge, left edge, corners, scalloped, center thumbtack), gusty form-drag wind, per-cloth contact friction, and analytic collisions against a ground plane plus up to four spheres per cloth.

All cloths share one particle domain, so stepping is a fixed dispatch sequence regardless of cloth count: one integrate pass, a ping-ponged series of constraint passes, then one vertex-write pass per cloth straight into that cloth's mesh vertex buffer (engine Vertex layout — rendering costs zero CPU geometry work). Grids (re)initialize analytically on the GPU from each cloth's origin + axis vectors, so building, resetting, or re-dropping a cloth never uploads particle data.

API

  • Cloth.build(specs, opts?) -> handles — build the system from a list of cloth specs (grid size, spacing, origin/axes, pin preset, wind, colliders, pattern + colours, material). opts.iterations sets constraint iterations per step (default 9, forced odd).
  • Cloth.step(dt) — advance every cloth one step; call once per frame in play mode.
  • Cloth.reset(handle?) — re-initialize one cloth's grid (nil = all) on the next step.
  • Cloth.setSphere(handle, slot, x, y, z, r) — animate a collider sphere (r <= 0 disables the slot).
  • Cloth.setOrigin(handle, x, y, z) — move the grid origin; pinned particles follow live.
  • Cloth.setWind(handle, dir, strength, gust?, freq?) — retune wind.
  • Cloth.readPositions(handle) — read simulated particle positions back to the CPU (validation / tooling).
  • Cloth.destroy() — tear down render entities, meshes, and GPU buffers.

Compute passes: cloth_step (integrate), cloth_constrain (one Jacobi iteration), cloth_vertices (particles → engine vertices with smooth normals, grid UVs, and procedural pattern colours). Pair with the fabric_surface shader / fabric_* materials for two-sided sheen-lit rendering.

GPU cloth simulation system. Simulates any number of rectangular cloth sheets entirely on the GPU: Verlet integration, Jacobi constraint relaxation (structural / shear / bend springs), pin presets, gusty form-drag wind, and analytic collisions (ground plane + up to 4 spheres per cloth). Every cloth lives in one shared particle domain, so a step is a fixed dispatch sequence no matter how many cloths exist: 1 integrate pass, N constraint passes ping-ponging two position buffers, then 1 vertex-write pass per cloth into that cloth's own mesh vertex buffer (engine Vertex layout — the mesh renders with zero CPU geometry work). Grid (re)initialization happens on the GPU from each cloth's origin + axis vectors, so resetting or re-dropping a cloth never uploads positions. local Cloth = require("cloth") local sheets = Cloth.build({ { name = "flag", cols = 48, rows = 30, spacing = 0.068, origin = { -8.9, 6.7, -9 }, axisU = { 1, 0, 0 }, axisV = { 0, -1, 0 }, pin = "left", material = "fabric_canvas", wind = { dir = { 1, 0, 0.15 }, strength = 6, gust = 4, freq = 1.7 }, pattern = "bands", patternScale = 1.5, colorA = { 0.75, 0.12, 0.10, 1 }, colorB = { 0.92, 0.88, 0.80, 1 }, }, }) Cloth.step(dt) -- once per frame (play mode) Cloth.reset(sheets[1]) -- re-drop one cloth (nil = all) Cloth.setSphere(sheets[1], 0, x, y, z, r) -- animate a collider Cloth.setOrigin(sheets[1], x, y, z) -- drag the pinned edge Cloth.destroy()

Local-space bounds for the mesh: the grid rectangle expanded by its own larger dimension in every direction (cloth blows, swings, and drapes well outside its rest rectangle), floored a bit below the ground plane.

build(specs: ?, opts: ?) → void

Build the whole cloth system from a list of cloth specs. Tears down any previous system. Returns the list of cloth handles (pass them to step-time mutators). opts.iterations sets constraint iterations per step (forced odd).

remesh(st: ?) → void

Re-send each cloth mesh's buffer registration. The renderer draws these meshes from a slab copy taken at registration time, so every step re- registers to mirror the freshly computed vertices into the slab (an in-place GPU→GPU copy — same guid, same size). This also heals the build()-time registration, which can race the buffer creation commands from the same call and leave the mesh permanently undrawn.
