What it does

bank

Every sound Helsinki Life makes, and how loud each one sits.

One recipe per name, each a pure function returning a game.sound.synth track - so the same bake produces the same samples on any machine, and nothing here reaches the network or the host. game.sound.Sound reads the baked clips back; nothing else needs this module.

What it holds

  • The 22 named effects - exactly HL.SFX, the contract the other slices emit against with HL.emit("sfx", { name }). Everything is in D major so a UI click, a payday and the music bed agree with each other.
  • The two long beds - bed (a 28 s waltz) and harbour (a 16 s quay ambience). Both are stored as pcm rather than Opus: a bed's last frame runs into its first once a lap, and a lossy round trip moves the samples on both sides of that join.
  • The mix - CHANNELS (the level each channel sits at), SFX_GAIN (per-effect trim), BED_BY_PHASE (how loud the music is in each phase of the game) and DUCK (how far the beds drop under the Konduktööri).

Where the beds come from

The preferred source is a generated take, cut down to a seamless loop by folding its continuation back over its head. The prompts that made the takes this world ships are written at the top of the beds section in init.luau, so the pair can be made again.

When there is no take - the service is down, the credit is spent, a clone of this world wants to rebuild from source alone - synthBed() and synthHarbour() make the same two beds out of arithmetic instead: a 12-bar D major waltz in 3/4, and a harbour of drones, water grains, four gulls and a far-off tram bell. The game is never left silent by a generation that did not happen.

Baking

Run from an execute, never from a component: a create made inside a component callback is filed in the ephemeral runtime store, which is not what a clip the world ships wants to be.

local Bank = require("game.sound.bank")
Bank.bakeSfxAll()                        -- the 22 named effects
Bank.bakeTake("harbour", pcm, rate, ch, Bank.AMBIENCE_SPEC)
Bank.missing() -- what this world has not got

At runtime, Bank.resolve(name) hands back the clip or nil. Every asset reference in it is a static identity literal - a computed asset.resolve cannot be pinned, and a world holding one cannot be published.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

bank - every sound HELSINKI LIFE makes, and how loud each one sits. One recipe per name. A recipe is a pure function of nothing: it returns a Synth track, so the same bake produces the same samples on any machine and nothing here reaches the network or the host. The named effects are exactly `HL.SFX` - the contract the other slices emit against with `HL.emit("sfx", { name = ... })`. The two long beds are built once from generated takes and stored as `pcm`, because a looping bed's last frame runs into its first once a lap. local Bank = require("game.sound.bank") Bank.bakeAll() -- from an execute, once; writes the assets Bank.resolve("hop") -- at runtime; the clip or nil Everything is in D major so a click, a payday and the bed agree.

descriptionThe sound library of Helsinki Life: one recipe per named effect, the two seamless looping beds (a waltz and a harbour ambience), and the mix levels that decide how loud each sits. Bakes the clips into the world and resolves them back at runtime.

# synth The DSP bench Helsinki Life's sounds are computed on. It renders mono f32 tracks out of arithmetic - oscillator stacks, filtered noise, envelopes, pitch names - and encodes them into the ZAUD payload a `.soundClip` stores. No network, no host file, no service: it runs headless and costs only CPU. Consumed by `game.sound.bank`, which holds one recipe per sound in the game. ## Tracks wrap, and that is the point `Synth.track(seconds, rate)` is a fixed-length buffer, and every generator writes **wrapped**: a note starting near the end continues at the head. A track rendered this way is one period of an infinite periodic signal, so its last frame runs into its first with no step - whatever frequencies it holds and however long the tails are. That is what makes the looping beds seamless, and `clipRef:loopSeam()` reads the result back. ## What it offers | Call | What it makes | |---|---| | `Synth.track(seconds, rate?)` | An empty track. `RATE_SFX` is 48 kHz, `RATE_BED` 24 kHz. | | `Synth.tone(tr, start, dur, freq, amp, opts)` | One note. `opts.wave` picks a partial stack; glide, vibrato and detune are there too. | | `Synth.noise(tr, start, dur, amp, opts)` | A noise burst through a low-pass, high-pass or swept band-pass. | | `Synth.chord(tr, start, dur, freqs, amp, opts)` | The same note shape at several frequencies. | | `Synth.hz("F#3")` | A pitch name as a frequency. | | `Synth.fromPcm(pcm, srcRate, channels, dstRate)` | Audio from elsewhere, folded to mono and resampled through a pre-filter. | | `Synth.loopify(tr, loopSeconds, fadeSeconds)` | A seamless loop cut out of a longer take by equal-power crossfade. | | `Synth.blend` / `gain` / `normalize` / `peak` / `rms` | Mixing and finishing. | | `Synth.encode(tr, opts?)` | The ZAUD payload; `pcm` by default. | `wave` names: `sine`, `tri`, `square`, `saw`, `reed`, `celesta`, `pluck`, `bell`, `gong`, `horn`. A partial carrying a `decay` above 1 fades faster than the note body, which is what makes a struck bell sound struck. ```lua local Synth = require("game.sound.synth") local tr = Synth.track(1.0, Synth.RATE_SFX) Synth.tone(tr, 0, 0.9, Synth.hz("A5"), 0.5, { wave = "gong", decay = 3.2 }) Synth.normalize(tr, 0.88) local zaud = Synth.encode(tr) ```
