What it does

helm.inputMap

The controls of the player's junk in Ninja Pirates of the Baltic.

group = "vehicle", suppresses = { "player" } — taking the wheel takes the player over, so the on-foot walk, jump and mouse-look answer to nothing while the Helm holds this map, and they come back the moment it releases.

Activated by game.helm.Helm through its inputMap field. Point that field at another map to rebind the boat without touching the component.

The readings are raw on purpose: the deadzones here only cut stick noise, and everything that makes the wheel feel heavy — the engine ramp, the blade swinging over, the hull answering the blade — is the ship model in the component. Smoothing the reading as well would make the wheel feel vague without making the boat feel heavier.

helm.inputMap — the controls of the player's junk. Taking the wheel takes the player over: while this map is live it stands down the whole `player` group, so the on-foot walk and jump answer to nothing for as long as the Helm component holds the map. The ninja is at the wheel; they are not also walking around the deck. Three controls, each carrying keyboard, gamepad and touch: throttle axis1 ahead / astern W S triggers left stick Y rudder axis1 starboard / port D A stick X left stick X fire button loose the broadside Space R1 a screen button Read by `game.helm.Helm` — see that component's README for how the readings become a heading and a speed.

descriptionThrottle, rudder and broadside for a sailing ship. Stands down the on-foot player group while the helm has the wheel, and suits any world where the player drives a boat rather than walks.
