What it does

updraftTower

The Codex Tower — the place Updraft burns down. Slice 1 of four; the film that drives it is film.updraftFilm, which calls this module's build, reset and tick in that order every play.

Everything here is generated from film.updraftFilm.geo and coloured from film.updraftFilm.look. No dimension and no colour is written twice.

What it builds

PieceShape
Shaft walla stone-coursed cylinder at innerRadius, from the vault to the dome springing, with the four ground-floor doors cut out of it and their reveals through the wall
Exteriorthe drum at outerRadius, eight full-height pilasters, a cornice — the silhouette shot 14 reads from 800 m
22 galleriesannular oak decks on radial joists, an oak fascia at the void edge, and a brass rail with stanchions and a three-band nosing that caps the deck
Shelving2 482 oak-and-brass bays as ONE population, one variant per gallery so each gallery chars on its own
Volumes~239 000 as 88 populations, four per gallery, so the shelves can empty in the order the fire reached them
Lantern dome176 glass panes on lead came, each pane an entity built around its own centre so the blow-out can tumble it
Reading floorblack slate laid as slabs, an iron grille ring venting the sunken vault, forty desks in three rings, forty brass oil lamps with glass chimneys, and the open folio on Desk 7
Reading lamps226 brass lamps on counterweight arms, hung off the rail out over the void
Plaina drifted snow disc out to 1.6 km
Collapse300 volumes and 26 shelf timbers on Gallery 12 as parked physics bodies, above static plates and rails under the eleven galleries below

What moves

tick(s) reads s.heat, s.emptied and s.t, and nothing else.

  • The folio's corner lifts and settles in the draught off the floor grilles (shot 1).
  • 226 reading lamps swing on their arms — dead calm at heat = 0, agitated as the tower starts drawing (shot 3).
  • Loose pages skid along the gallery boards, faster where the fire is (shot 3).
  • Forty desk flames gutter, and lean inward once the indraft arrives (shots 2, 11).
  • The Gallery 6 rail chars, glows and sags between its stanchions, and a rivet head runs and drips off it (shot 9).
  • The shelves empty sector by sector on s.emptied, in the order galleryHeat reached them (shots 5, 12).
  • Gallery 12 lets go at t = 57.4: 326 bodies go dynamic, thrown inward hard enough to clear the rail below, and fall ninety metres (shot 10).
  • The dome fails pane by pane from t = 70.6, then blows out ballistically at t = 77 (shots 12, 13).

The fire's shape

fireFront(heat) is where the flame front stands, as a gallery number, pinned to the shot list: front(0.22) = 3.6 and front(0.32) = 6.6, so shot 7 reads as Gallery 3 climbing to Gallery 7 over its six seconds. galleryHeat(heat, g) is how hot one gallery is; every surface reads it and nobody agrees by hand.

Char and ember glow are pushed as uniforms on runtime materials keyed updraft/tower/<surface>/<gallery> — six surfaces times twenty-two galleries, written only when the value actually moved. Nothing touches disk per frame.

Reading it from outside

local Tower = require("film.updraftTower")
Tower.report() -- what stands: volumes, panes, debris, collapsed, blown
Tower.poseAt(48.0) -- pose the place at a film time, without running the film
Tower.rebuild() -- tear the place down and build it again
Tower.galleryHeat(h, g)
Tower.galleryY(g)

poseAt and rebuild are authoring doors. The film calls neither.

Updraft slice 1 — THE TOWER. The Codex Tower: shaft, 22 galleries, shelving, two hundred thousand volumes, the leaded lantern dome, the slate reading floor, the plain.

meshAsset(name: string, geom: any) → void

The two meshes a POPULATION draws have to be assets: a population variant names its mesh by asset reference, and a runtime GPU guid put there resolves to nothing and registers no draw at all. They are also authored ONCE and never re-authored — an asset rewritten under its own guid leaves the renderer's GPU store holding the entry it already had, and every population drawing from it reports "not resident" once per variant per frame while the shelves are silently absent from the picture.

argtypedescription
namestring

populationAsset(name: string, variants: { any }) → void

A population asset is authored ONCE, for the same reason a mesh asset is. Re-authoring one during a build costs more than the write: while play is running a /source write lands on the play shadow, and a population read back from the shadow never reaches the GPU — it reports its full instance count, reports `usable`, registers ZERO draws, and logs nothing at all. The archive is then simply absent from every interior shot while the film reports success. Resolving the asset that is already on disk is what keeps the two hundred and thirty thousand volumes in the picture when the film is built from `onLoad()`, which is the only way it is ever built.
