THE CITY REMEMBERS

An open-world city game where the city remembers everything you do. Help a stranger on Day 1 and they recognise you across town on Day 5 — while a crowd of witnesses files you away, district by district, through a full day and night of changing weather.

You step off a train into a city of eight million people who do not know your name — and then you do something, and the city starts to.

Every kindness, debt and grudge you create is dated, attributed and kept, and it comes back to you days later, in another part of the city, from someone who remembers.

What works right now

The memory system — the whole point of the game. Not a concept, a running mechanic:

  • Walk into the alley off Delancey in Old Town and the city writes it down: Day 1, 19:05, Old Town — "Walked into the alley off Delancey and the man holding the door walked away." Old Town's standing with you moves to +22, and ten people saw it.
  • Everyone standing close enough keeps it too. Break a window with a crowd watching and the crowd remembers: named pedestrians carry it, one of them with a real grudge against you personally, and that district goes straight to SKEPTICAL.
  • Come back days later and somewhere else, and they know you. The woman you helped is no longer in the alley — a day later she is at the Pier Market across the city in Riverfront, and when you walk up to her she recognises you and offers you a name.
  • The chain you opened on Day 1 becomes a different chain on Day 5.

You have to choose. Stop at the argument outside the Osprey and the game asks: [E] INVESTIGATE — Two men outside the Osprey. You can walk on. Standing there does nothing on its own — the city only remembers what you actually decided to do. Walk far enough past and that is recorded instead: "Heard someone shouting in the alley off Delancey and did not go in."

Time passes and the weather turns. A full day runs in six real minutes: the sun rises in the east, crosses, sets in the west, and the light goes from night through dawn, noon, gold and the dusk the artwork was drawn in. Weather changes on its own — clear, overcast, rain, heavy rain, fog — and it soaks the streets: wetness ramps up while it rains and dries after, with haze that thickens and clears. Every peer in a shared world gets the same weather at the same minute.

Pedestrians. Sixty-four of them, walking the street network from corner to corner and choosing again at each. How many are in a district is that district's density, so Downtown is busy and the Industrial Belt is not, and the crowd streams around you so the streets you're on are the crowded ones.

The ledger. Press M: a dated timeline of everything the city holds against you and for you, and a sidebar grading how each of the six districts stands on you — Downtown Core, Riverfront, South Docks, Old Town, East Ward, Industrial Belt, from RESPECTED to HOSTILE. The bottom of the screen carries the live version, and the day count keeps running across sessions.

The city itself. Generated from rules: a 9 × 9 grid of blocks with 20 m streets, textured brick in the low districts, dark glass on the downtown towers, weathered steel through the industrial belt, eight named landmarks (Union Station, Mercy General, 4th Precinct, the bank, the dealership, the market, the hotel, the diner), all solid enough to walk into.

Honest state

A first playable version. Still not built: no driving, no traffic and no police, and no sound at all. The walking is the engine's default character controller, and E is bound to the keyboard only — gamepad and touch are declared but unverified. The HUD is missing its minimap, and rain falls on a city that is not actually rendered wet from above. Frames run 50–90 ms, and the crowd plus the city are most of it. The memory system underneath is real and tested, and it has a city with people, weather and a clock to remember with.

Original work. No characters, stories or assets from any existing game.
