Ironspine
Free-solo the spine of a dead colossus in a storm sea. Two hands, no rope, and every grip carrying a load you can watch in newtons — 190 metres of wet iron between you and the Crown Beacon.
IRONSPINE
A dead machine-colossus lies half-sunk in a storm sea. The only part still above water is its spine: 190 metres of ribbed iron vertebrae going up into cloud, with a Crown Beacon at the top that has been dark for forty-one years.
You are a salvager in a heavy exosuit. You are going up there to light it.
What you actually do
You do not press a direction and watch a climb animation. You have a body with mass hanging in a physics simulation and two independently controlled hands, and everything after that is consequence.
- Mouse aims. The hold under the aim, inside your reach, is what a clamp will close on — the reticle highlights exactly the one you will get.
- LMB / RMB close the left and right mag-clamp. A closed clamp is a real constraint anchored to a real rung, and your whole weight now hangs off it.
- W / S winch in and pay out along the loaded arm — this is how you gain height.
- A / D lean, shifting your centre of mass between the two hands.
- Space is a committed lunge: both clamps open, and nothing catches you but you.
- Your boots solve to whatever they touch. A planted boot pushes, and that push comes straight off your arms.
Why the numbers on screen matter
Each clamp shows the measured load it is carrying, in newtons — the actual reaction the constraint is solving, not an estimate. Stamina burns in proportion to it.
Hang one-handed with your feet in the air and your centre of mass swinging out, and the number climbs, the meter empties, and the clamp opens itself whether you wanted it to or not. Get a boot on something and stand into it and the number falls. Catch yourself after a two-metre drop and the shock rips the clamp off before you get a say. There is no health bar. The only way to fail is the simulation deciding you are not holding on any more.
The route
Rungs, lips, pipes and bolts spiral up the column. It pinches where the vertebrae taper and forces one-handed reaches. Wind rises with altitude and comes in gusts that torque you off the surface, so the top is genuinely harder than the bottom for physical reasons rather than a difficulty number.
Piton anchors roughly every 26 m are your checkpoints — clip one and a fall costs you the pitch instead of the run. Come off above your last piton and the sea is waiting.
To win: get both clamps onto the Crown Beacon's ignition ring, 190 m up, and hold for three seconds.
Worth seeing
- The air changes with height. Spray, sodium haze and black wet iron at the base; thin clear cold light above the cloud deck at the crown. Two frames from the same run look like two different places.
- The suit. Ribbed hydraulic forearms, a backpack winch, a trailing tether, brass fittings and salt bloom, and mag-clamps that read at gameplay distance. You can tell from the pose alone which arm is taking the weight.
- The instrumentation. Per-hand grip meters left and right, the load in newtons beside each, altitude against the crown, wind, and the ignition charge — laid out so a glance mid-fall tells you which hand is dying.
- The top. The beacon catching is the shot the whole climb is for.
One climber. One ascent. No rope.
