Pastel Astral Dream

A 97-second film: seven islands of confection hang in a starfield over a sea of poured cream, a warm nebula front crosses them, and what melts lifts instead of running down.

Seven islands of confection hang in a starfield above a flat sea of poured cream. A 340 m marshmallow mesa banded with wafer strata; 400 m of meringue cliffs whipped into 120 m peaks; an ice-cream glacier in pistachio, strawberry and vanilla; a 90 m tower of stacked scoops. All of it frozen hard, matte and dusted with sugar frost under cold starlight and a pale ringed body low on the horizon.

Then the astral weather arrives. A nebula front crosses the archipelago from the left, and it is warm. The confection melts — and in this place what melts does not run down, it lifts. Beads detach upward. The glacier gains a gloss and calves into the sky. The scoop tower slumps and drops its top three. By the last movement the mesa's whole upper surface is leaving as a slow pastel column rising into the astral, the cream sea has fallen nine metres, and it is glowing from inside.

The arc

Three things are true in the last shot that were not true in the first.

  • The matter has moved from the ground into the sky. Shot 2 is an archipelago under an empty starfield. Shot 13 is a half-dissolved archipelago joined to a new band of pastel colour across that starfield, and the band is made of the islands.
  • The key light has inverted twice — cold starlight from high and behind, then the nebula front from above and left, then the glowing sea and the column from below. By the end nothing in frame is lit from above and every shadow points up.
  • The state of matter has changed — hard, matte, dry and still, to soft, glossy, wet, flowing and coming apart.

The look

High key and non-photoreal, which is the opposite of the usual demo. The sky is the only dark value in the film: everything else sits in the top half of the range, and every shot is measured against a gate of 110–190 mean luma with nothing but the sky under 40. Marshmallow white-pink with a real subsurface lobe, near-white meringue, pistachio, strawberry, blueberry, vanilla and lilac, with wafer as the only warm brown. Sugar frost is the sheen lobe, on every confection surface. Nine of the thirteen lenses are under 40°, three of them macros under 16°.

How it is built

The film is one cutscene and its clock is the only clock in the world. Every animator in it is a pure function of film time: the same t in gives the same world out, every time, which is what lets the whole thing be scrubbed frame by frame and recorded twice identically.

  • @user::pad.astral — the starfield, the sugar snow, the nebula front, the moths and the rising column, as six lattice-mesh populations that recover per-instance identity from floor(world_position / cell).
  • @user::pad.look — three key lights on one swinging sun field, and a post-process pass that exposes the confection and the void separately, gated on scene depth.
  • @user::pad.shots / .camera / .score — the thirteen shots, the lens, and nine deterministically synthesised, loop-seamless sound clips mixed as functions of film time.

Known gaps

Shot 7 (the glacier) reads as a still pink mass — it moves, but only just above the measurement floor. Shot 11 (inside the column) needs half its length before real matter goes past the lens. And acts II and III are dominated by one magenta-to-salmon field, so the hue separation the palette promises really only survives in act I.
