Scale and Feather: The Organic and Creature Material Collection

24 organic and creature materials for the Swatchbook material library, version 1.0.1: leafBroad, leafNeedle, leafAutumn and petalPink as cut-out cards that glow when lit from behind, plus barkMoss and a fly agaric mushroomCap; coral, a shell with a ribbed outside and mother-of-pearl inside, and polished motherOfPearl; bone, horn, scalesReptile, silver scalesFish, a barred featherCard and a chitinBeetle shell that slides from emerald through blue to violet; light, medium, deep and fantasy jade skin that lets warm light through; brown and white fur cards; and leafToon, scalesToon and skinToon. Three style families (realistic, stylised, toon) and no metal anywhere: the fish's silver and the beetle's shimmer come from a non-metallic layered film. Real-world sizes, physically based colour and roughness, seamless when tiled 4 x 4, and light enough for the web: 17.9 MB of textures for all 24, at most 5 per material. Install the organicMaterials package and every material appears in the library's list, picker and gallery for every player; swap one for another by changing its name. Walk the gallery to see each one on four shapes beside its reference picture under six switchable lighting looks, next to a backlit still life of leaves, flowers, shells and a feather.

Scale and Feather 1.0.1

24 organic and creature materials for the Swatchbook material library (materialLibraryKit 1.3.1), behind one name each. Stop hand-mixing flat greens and browns: put a real leaf, bark, scale or skin on anything with one line.

  • Plants: leafBroad, leafNeedle, leafAutumn and petalPink as cut-out cards with real outlines that glow softly when the light is behind them; barkMoss; mushroomCap.
  • Sea life: coral, shell (chalky ribs outside, rainbow mother-of-pearl inside), motherOfPearl.
  • Creature parts: bone, horn, scalesReptile, scalesFish (silver with a colour shift), featherCard, chitinBeetle (emerald face-on, sliding through blue to violet).
  • Skin: skinLight, skinMedium, skinDeep and skinFantasy (jade): stylised, soft and a little translucent.
  • Fur: furCardBrown, furCardWhite. Toon: leafToon, scalesToon, skinToon.

Every material belongs to one of three style families (realistic, stylised, toon) and none is metal: metallic is 0 on all 24, and the fish's silver and the beetle's shimmer come from a non-metallic layered film, as in nature. Every material is tagged: organic, its kind, style, tile size in metres, finish, non-metallic, whether it lets light through, cut-out card or tiled, texture cost, not animated. Real-world sizes, colours with no lighting painted in, green-up normals, seamless at 4 x 4, no shimmer at 30 m. 17.9 MB of texture for all 24 (25.9 MB with the reference pictures); no material samples more than 5 textures.

Install

Install organicMaterials from ZeroMind; the materialLibraryKit core comes with it. Then:

local Materials = require("~materialLibraryKit.Materials")
local cube = entity.spawn("leafCube", { synced = true, components = { Model = { model = "cube" } } })
cube.localPosition = { 0, 0.5, 3 }
assert(Materials.apply(cube, "leafBroad"))

In this world

You land in the swatch gallery: all 24 materials on a floor tile, a wall, a cube, a sphere, a shader ball and a cylinder, each beside its reference picture, with plaques on one grid. The toolbar switches six lighting looks for everyone and opens the material picker; a material anyone applies shows for every player. In front of the spawn stands a little backlit still life: a potted plant of leaf and flower cards, two shells and a feather.

New in 1.0.1: eight materials renamed to their intended names (old names: needlePine, petalFlower, barkMossy, beetleShell, seaShell, toonLeaf, toonScales, toonSkin), the jade skin moved into the stylised family, no metal anywhere, and the beetle shell now shows its green-blue-violet shift. The package README has the full table, texture memory, how each material was made and checked, and the known limits.
