reaction

The Mother Liquor film's Reaction stage: the flask, the solution, the drop, the caustic, and the whole Act III crystal set

One number, concentration, drives the entire colour cascade: 0 clear, 0.5 amber, 1 violet. It is not a tint — the liquid shader takes the chord the view ray cuts through the body of solution and attenuates the scene behind it over that distance, so raising the number darkens the middle of the flask far faster than the rim, and the luminescence, the caustic on the epoxy and the light the flask throws into the room all read off the same value.

Moving: the stir bar spins and holds a vortex dimple in the surface; the burette swells a drop, necks it, drops it and rings the surface where it lands; the meniscus climbs the glass; the colour front blooms out of the impact point and is dragged into a spiral; the caustic crawls; and forty metres under the floor a seed nucleates and throws a lattice that takes the frame.

Everything visible is a pure function of film time. applyAt(t) is that function and tick is a call to it, so a held frame can be driven by hand.

Serves shots 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

The stir bar's angle. It runs the whole film; the rate is chosen so the bar reads as turning at 24 frames a second rather than strobing backwards.

levelAt(t: number) → number

The liquid level, above the flask's base. The burette adds to it all film, and opens up over shot 11, which is the shot that watches it climb.

The height of the liquid surface at a point, in the flask's own space. Three things are happening on it at once and they add: the meniscus climbing the glass, the vortex the stir bar holds open, and the rings of whatever drops have landed recently.

Extend the lattice to `g`. The mesh is rewritten only when the growth actually moved: for the seventy-six seconds before the seed nucleates, nothing here has changed and re-uploading it every frame would spend a whole mesh a frame saying so.

# geom The geometry builders the Reaction slice is made of — lathes, height-field discs, and a growable hexagonal prism Every shape here is built from numbers rather than imported, because every one of them has to be able to CHANGE: the liquid's top cap is a height field carrying a meniscus, a vortex and a drop's ripples at once, and the crystal is a lattice whose prisms extend on camera. A builder returns a plain `{ positions, normals, uvs, indices }` table — what `renderer.mesh.create` takes. `prism` writes one hexagonal prism with a pointed termination whose normals depend only on its axis and ring angle, never on its length, which is what lets a whole lattice grow by rewriting positions alone.

# reaction_liquid The supersaturated solution in the hero flask, clear through amber to violet Binds `liquid_body` to the flask's liquid mesh. `bounds` and `radii` carry the analytic truncated cone the thickness integral is taken through, and the stage rewrites them as the level climbs. Blended, double-sided, and depth-writing so the nearest surface wins whichever face the camera is looking at.

# reaction_glass The hero flask's own borosilicate wall Binds `flask_glass` at 1.474 with a 2.6 mm wall. Premultiplied so the specular survives at four percent opacity. `inner_glow` carries a little of the solution's own light back out through the wall once it luminesces.

# reaction_caustic The ellipse of light the flask throws on the black epoxy and on the bench face Binds `caustic` additively to a horizontal quad on the worktop and a vertical one on the front of the bench. Its colour is the solution's colour at the film's current concentration, so the pool turns amber and then violet with the flask.

# reaction_void What surrounds a camera that has gone under the surface and is not coming out Binds `interior_void` to an inward-facing shell. Front-culled so the far inside surface is what draws, and opaque so the crystal in front of it has something composed to refract.

# reaction_drop One drop of solution on the burette tip — a small, strongly bending bead The same wall shader at water's index and four times the bend, because a two-millimetre bead is nearly all curvature and bends what is behind it hard enough to read at ten degrees of lens.

# reaction_crystal The growing lattice: dispersive, transmissive, lit by nothing directly Binds `crystal` to the lattice mesh the stage extends on camera. Many facets stack in one pixel, so the specular gain is set for a dozen of them rather than for one.

# reaction_facet The last clear face of the crystal, the one the film looks out through and then loses A second binding of `crystal` with a stronger bend and more dispersion, kept separate from the lattice so its `opacity` can close over on its own schedule while the rest of the lattice stays transmissive.
