What it does

game.Sound

Everything WICK is heard as. Mounted once, on mount_audio.

The shaft is a granite tube on a storm night, and the mix is built the way you would hear one: the weather holds the floor, the sea gets louder as it climbs toward you, the score comes in a layer at a time as the metres do, the cat's own sounds are close and dry, and the Keeper is the only thing allowed to push the rest of it down.

What it owns

Eight sources, created under the mount on first awake and reused across a hot reload:

EntityWhat it is
snd_stormthe wind, the rain on the stone, the pressure of the night. Looping, Ambient, channel ambient.
snd_seathe water below. Looping, spatial, moved to Core.state.seaHeight every frame, so the shaft is heard filling rather than told that it is.
snd_score_athe score's low strings. Under everything from the title card on.
snd_score_bthe score's plucked figure. Arrives with the first milestone and rises with the height.
snd_score_cthe score's tremolo and drum. In at the surge and not out until the lamp.
snd_keeperthe Keeper's voice. One line at a time.
snd_catthe one-shot host for everything the cat does, spatial with no rolloff, so the wall it kicks off is heard on that side.
snd_roomthe one-shot host for everything the tower does — thunder, the surge, the lamp, the beam, the stings.

The three score layers all start on the first frame at volume zero, so they stay in step with each other for the whole session and a layer arriving is a fader move rather than a new clip starting out of phase.

What it listens to

Every event in game.Core's table:

kick land grip slip fall hazard splash milestone surge lamp say phase — plus lightning and beam, which the staging slice may raise for its own beats and which the game does not depend on: the storm makes its own thunder on a timer, and lighting the lamp brings its own beam.

hazard is played by kind — spike, wire, plaster, chain each have their own sound.

It writes nothing. It never touches Core.state.

Where the sound comes from

  • audio.synth — the bank, computed on the CPU out of raw f32 PCM. No service, no network: it cannot go quiet because a generation failed. Beds are stored as PCM and written so the last sample runs into the first.
  • audio.voice — the Keeper, generated once and cached as a clip per line. A line whose audio is missing is still said: the caption is emitted by Core.say whatever happens here.

The mix

Four channels — ambient, music, sfx, voice — and the fields below set their levels. The Keeper ducks ambient and music while he speaks and gives them back a beat after he stops.

# audio.cues — the tally of what was actually played `game.Sound` bumps a counter every time it hands a clip to the mixer, so a round can be checked against the events that drove it: one kick sound per `kick`, one line per `say`, one surge and one lamp. ```lua local C = require("audio.cues") C.reset() -- play a round -- C.report() -- { played = { kick = 34, land = 33, ... }, refused = {}, total = 71 } ``` Reading a component's fields says what was ASKED for. This says what was SENT, which is the half that a missing clip or a cue with nothing behind it otherwise hides — `refused` counts exactly those. It counts; it decides nothing. Nothing in the game reads it.

# audio.voice — the Keeper, spoken WICK has one speaker. The Keeper is at the foot of the shaft with the sea coming in and a broken leg, and he talks the cat up the tower. His eight lines live in `game.Core`'s `LINES`; this module turns each of them into a clip named `wick_v_<id>` exactly once and hands it back by line id. ```lua local V = require("audio.voice") V.report() -- every line: whether it has a clip, and what is in it V.generate() -- start the lines that have none V.collect() -- promote what landed into .soundClip assets ``` `generate` and `collect` are run from an `execute`, never from a component: an asset created inside a component callback is filed in the ephemeral runtime store and never reaches the commit. ## Said once, kept A line that already has a clip is skipped, so re-running after a reload costs nothing and the eight readings never change between sessions. ## The written form is never the generation's to lose `Core.say` emits `caption` whatever happens here, and the screens slice prints it. A line whose audio is missing is a line that is read rather than a line that is gone, and `game.Sound` reports it once and carries on. ## One voice, on purpose The generator offers one reading voice. The Keeper is that voice, and there is nobody else in WICK who speaks — the cat does not talk, and the sea does not need to.

# Core The one table every slice of WICK shares: the constants that define the shaft, the sea and the camera framing, the blackboard the rules write and everyone reads, an event bus, the phase machine's single writer, and the Keeper's script. `local Core = require("game.Core")`. See `/zero/source/design/spec.md`. ## Exports - `Core.SHAFT`, `Core.SEA`, `Core.CAMERA`, `Core.STAGING_TIMEOUT` — the place. - `Core.state` — `phase`, `player {x, y, vx, vy, wall, facing, gripping, grip, alive}`, `height`, `best`, `seaHeight`, `seaRate`, `surged`, `lampLit`, `elapsed`, `kicks`, `run`. - `Core.events.on(name, fn) -> unsubscribe`, `Core.events.emit(name, ...)`, `Core.events.count(name)`. - `Core.setPhase(p)` — called by `game.Climb` only. - `Core.LINES`, `Core.say(id)` — the Keeper's lines; `say` emits `"say"` and `"caption"`. - `Core.heightClimbed()`, `Core.seaGap()`, `Core.resetRun()`, `Core.clamp`, `Core.lerp`.
