What it does

Narrator

The Konduktööri, the tram conductor who narrates Helsinki Life. Mounted on mount_deck by the scene entrypoint; nothing has to attach him by hand.

He listens to the game over the HL bus and, for every turn call, every event card, every choice and every milestone, does two things at once: plays his recorded line, and emits the same words as a caption.

What he answers to

phase (intro, title) · turnStart · choice · choiceMade · card · cardClosed · moveEnd (payday, study, graduation, the ferry) · milestone (wedding, family) · finished · gameOver · money (going into the red) · beat (the wedding).

What he emits

say    { line, voice, text, title?, kind, audible, durationMs, priority }
sayEnd { line }

text is the caption to print and title the card's heading when the line came from one, so a card drawn as a heading over a body reads exactly as the clip sounds. durationMs is how long he runs, so a caption strip can hold a line for as long as he speaks it. kind is "event" / "career" / "home" / "line".

The words come first

audible says whether the line is also being HEARD. A line whose clip never generated still says itself on screen, held for as long as it would have taken to read aloud, and the missing clip is named once in the log. Nothing about the game stops because a recording is not there.

One mouth

A line asks to be said and waits its turn. An important line (a card, a choice, the ending) cuts in on whatever is running, including on another important line, because the card it belongs to has already replaced the one on screen. Chatter (a turn call, a payday) queues behind and is dropped once it has gone stale. Dismissing a card stops him mid-sentence.

Fields

FieldWhat it does
volumehow loud he is, 0..1
gapSecondsthe silence held between two lines
readSpeedwords per second assumed for a line with no clip
chatterwhether the turn calls and paydays are spoken at all

He speaks through his own non-spatial Audio source on the voice channel, so audio.setChannelVolume("voice", x) ducks him under the music without touching anything else.

NARRATOR: the Konduktööri, the voice of HELSINKI LIFE. Mounted on `mount_deck` by the scene entrypoint. He listens to the game over the HL bus and, for every turn call, every event card, every choice and every milestone, does two things at once: * plays his recorded line through an Audio source on this entity, and * emits HL "say" so the screens slice can print the same words. The words come first. A line whose clip never generated, or whose clip went missing from the world, still says itself on screen for as long as it would have taken to read aloud. `say.audible` reports which of the two happened, and the missing clip is logged once by name. SPEAKING ONE AT A TIME. The Konduktööri has one mouth: a line asks to be said and waits its turn. An important line (a card, a choice, the ending) INTERRUPTS whatever chatter is running; chatter (a turn call, a payday) queues behind and is dropped if it has gone stale. Dismissing a card stops him mid-sentence, which is what a player who has already read it expects. Events consumed: phase, turnStart, choice, card, cardClosed, moveEnd, milestone, finished, gameOver, money, beat. Events emitted: say { line, voice, text, title?, kind, audible, durationMs, priority } `text` is the caption to print, `title` the card's own heading when the line came from one, `kind` is "event" | "career" | "home" | "line", `audible` says whether it is also being heard, and `durationMs` how long it runs, so a caption strip can hold it for exactly as long as he speaks. sayEnd { line } he finished, or was cut off. Clear the caption.

Audio

argtypedescription
key?

durationOf(key: ?, text: ?) → void

How long the line lasts. The generated clip table carries every clip's own measured length, so nothing is opened while the game is running. A line with no clip holds its caption at a readable pace instead.

Speaking

say(key: ?, text: ?, priority: ?, interrupt: ?, extra: ?) → void

Ask the Konduktööri to say something. `priority` decides whether it waits; `interrupt` cuts in on a line of its OWN rank as well, which is what one card replacing another on screen needs.

Say a card, a career or a home: the printed body and the spoken body are both Deck's, so the caption and the clip can never disagree.

# HL The shared spine of *Helsinki Life*: constants, the board graph (43 tiles with positions, kinds, districts and successors), landmark anchors, camera framing numbers, the game state container, the event bus the slices talk over, the `HL.actions` table the rules fill in, the pacing (`HL.TIMING`) and the sound names (`HL.SFX`). ```lua local HL = require("game.core.HL") HL.tile(6).next -- { 7, 101 }: the fork at Pasila station HL.pawnSlot(22, 2) -- where pawn 2 stands on the Cathedral tile HL.on("moveStep", function(ev) ... end) HL.emit("sfx", { name = "hop" }) HL.state().players[1].money ```

# deck Everything a turn of **Helsinki Life** can draw, and every word the Konduktööri says. ```luau local Deck = require("game.deck.deck") ``` | Call | Gives you | |---|---| | `Deck.drawEvent(player)` | the next event card this player's life can actually be dealt | | `Deck.careers(player)` | three careers to choose between at Pasila station | | `Deck.homes()` | the three homes, cheapest first | | `Deck.line(key)` | one of the Konduktööri's narration lines, as printed text | | `Deck.speech(record)` | what he SAYS for a card or a line, which is what his clip holds | | `Deck.voiceManifest()` | every clip the deck expects, as `{ key, text }` | | `Deck.turnLine(colour)` | the turn-call key for a player colour | | `Deck.stack(id)` | put a named card on top of the pile (for a scripted moment) | ## What is in it **44 event cards**, all Helsinki: löyly on the Hernesaari shore, Vappu in the fountain, the first snow, kaamos and the expensive lamp, black ice on Kaisaniemenkatu, the gull that takes your salmon soup at the Market Square, a 1993 Muumi mug at the Hietalahti flea market, a ticket inspector on tram 3, a 1928 pipe under your floor, the icebreaker off Suomenlinna. **Nine careers**, six open to anyone (tram driver, barista, builder, chef, ferry deckhand, IT support) and three that need the Kumpula degree (architect, doctor, researcher). **Three homes**: a Kallio studio, a Töölö Jugend flat, an Eira sea-front apartment. **Nineteen narration lines** for the turns, the fork, the milestones and the end. ## Card shape ``` { id, kind = "event", title, sub, text, money?, onni?, tone, voice, requires? } ``` `tone` is `"good"` / `"bad"` / `"wry"` and `sub` is the place it happens, both for the card art. `requires` gates a card on a life already lived (`"career"`, `"home"`, `"degree"`, `"married"`, `"children"`); an ineligible card goes back in the pile and another is drawn, so nobody celebrates an anniversary before the wedding. `voice` is the card's own id, and it is also the name of the `.soundClip` under `game/deck/voice/` holding the Konduktööri reading it.

# clips The Konduktööri's recorded lines, one literal reference each, plus how long each one runs. Generated by `game.deck.voicegen`'s `writeClips()`. Do not hand-edit it. ```luau local Voice = require("game.deck.clips") Voice.clips.loyly -- the .soundClip of him reading the Löyly card, or nil Voice.durationMs.loyly -- how many milliseconds that reading takes ``` Every entry is a literal `asset.tryResolve`, so the clips are pinned statically and travel with the world when it is installed somewhere else. A line whose clip is missing resolves to `nil`, and the Narrator shows it as text instead.
