What it does

cinema

The cinema slice of FIRE FOR EFFECT: light, lens, timeline and sound. It is one of the four modules ffe.film drives, and it owns the four entities the scene build places for it — Sun, Sky, FilmCamera and FilmListener — which it finds by name and never respawns.

Everything it does is a pure function of the film time the director hands in. Nothing reads wall time, os.clock or engine time, which is the whole of the determinism argument: run the film twice, get the same film.

Exports

  • M.build(root) — re-entrant. Establishes the light rig, the atmosphere, the grade chain and the sound emitters, all parented under root.
  • M.tick(t, dt) — one rendered frame at FILM time t. Places the camera and the listener, then drives look, grade and sound.
  • M.reset() — called when the film rewinds.
  • M.report(t) — everything the slice is doing at film second t, as data: the eye, the aim, the lens, the light, the grade and the sound.
  • M.audit(step?) — walk the film without running it and report the camera, the shot and the listener's offset from the eye at every step.

What it is made of

ModuleWhat it owns
ffe.cinema.shotsThe sixteen camera set-ups, the lens each implies, and the shell's ride path for shot 6.
ffe.cinema.lookSun, cold fill, underfire, physical atmosphere, height fog.
ffe.cinema.gradeFocus, 180-degree shutter, bounded meter, grain and flare, one LUT per movement.
ffe.cinema.soundWind bed, gun reports and their valley echo, breech mechanics, the shot-6 pass-by, the silence of shot 15.
ffe.cinema.checkThe slice's own proof — cuts, determinism, the ear, the arc.

Usage

local Film = require("ffe.film")
local Cinema = require("ffe.cinema")

Film.seek(58) -- park frame-exact on shot 10
Film.drive() -- one frame at that time
Cinema.report(58) -- what the camera, the light and the mix are doing

require("ffe.cinema.check").all()   -- the whole slice's proof, as PASS/FAIL lines

Notes

  • The lens is authored once. A set-up states a vertical fov; the focal length the depth of field is built from comes out of it against a 24 mm sensor (Shots.focalLength). Nothing states millimetres.
  • Shot 16 IS shot 1 — the same table, shared by reference. Check.arc() asserts it with rawequal as well as by evaluating both stations, because a copy would drift the first time somebody nudged one of them.
  • The ear rides the lens, position and facing both. A listener carried to the right point with the wrong facing puts a gun that is on the left of the frame on the right of the mix.
  • Nothing here goes through the lighting toolbox. Its setSun / setAmbient fault on a scene holding a DirectionalLight component (#10510), and they spawn scene-durable light entities outside FilmRoot. Every light in this film is a component this slice writes directly, on an entity it owns.
  • The clock is shared. Four agents drive the one ffe.film clock in this world, so a Film.seek you made can be moved by somebody else between two calls. Read Film.time() back before trusting a capture.

ffe.cinema — SLICE: light, lens, timeline and sound Shots served: all 16. This file is the slice's face: it finds the four entities the scene build placed (`Sun`, `Sky`, `FilmCamera`, `FilmListener`), never respawns them, and hands each frame's film time to four modules that do the work: ffe.cinema.shots the sixteen camera set-ups, and the lens they imply ffe.cinema.look sun, fill, underfire, atmosphere, height fog ffe.cinema.grade focus, shutter, meter, grain, the per-movement LUT ffe.cinema.sound the wind bed, the reports and their valley echo, the breech mechanics, the shell's pass-by, the silence Everything is a pure function of the `t` the director hands in. Nothing reads wall time, `os.clock` or engine time, which is the whole of the determinism argument: run the film twice, get the same film. THE CAMERA IS THE EAR. `FilmListener` is moved to the camera's eye every tick, AFTER the camera is placed, so a spatial sound another slice authors is heard from where the shot is standing rather than from last frame's station.

placeCamera(eye: { number }, at: { number }, fov: number) → void

Place `FilmCamera` at `eye`, aim it at `at`, and put it on `fov` degrees. Returns the eye actually used, so the listener can follow the same point.

placeListener(eye: { number }) → void

The ear rides the lens — position AND facing. A listener carried to the right place with the wrong facing puts a gun that is on the left of the frame on the right of the mix, so the rotation matters as much as the point does.

Walk the whole film without running it: park on each second, drive every slice, and report the camera and the listener. This is what proves the cuts land on their stated seconds and the ear never leaves the lens.

# shots The sixteen camera set-ups of FIRE FOR EFFECT, one per entry in `Film.SHOTS` and in the same order, plus the lens each one implies. Consumed by `ffe.cinema`, which evaluates it every rendered frame. ## Exports - `Shots.SETUPS` — the sixteen set-ups. `SETUPS16` is `SETUPS1`, the same table by reference: that equality is the film's arc. - `Shots.eval(t) -> eye, aim, fov, setup, u` — the camera at film time `t`. Anchors that are functions are resolved first, so the result is plain numbers and `cutscene.evaluate` never sees an entity name that might be gone. - `Shots.focalLength(fov) -> mm` — the lens a vertical field of view implies against `Shots.SENSOR_HEIGHT` (24 mm, full frame). - `Shots.focusDistance(setup, eye, aim, u)` — the rack the shot asks for, or the distance to what it is aimed at when it does not rack. - `Shots.ridePosition(t)` / `Shots.shell(t)` / `Shots.rideDir(t)` — the registration round's flight, which shot 6's camera rides. - `Shots.check()` — every station evaluated at its own mid-point, as text. ## Places `HERO_MUZZLE`, `HERO_BREECH`, `HERO_CENTRE`, `BRASS_PILE`, `AMMO_DUMP`, `SPOTTING_MAST`, `EAST_LIP` — where the camera stands and what it looks at, in one block, so a station can be re-read against the geography instead of hunted for inside a shot. ## Notes - A named anchor is a preference, not a requirement. Four agents build this world in parallel, so a shot has to frame something whether or not its subject exists yet: `Shots.named` tries a list of entity names and falls through to a coordinate. Nothing in this file raises on a missing entity. - The ride is authored twice on purpose. `ffe.battery` owns the shell; when its entity is in the world the camera rides the real round, and when it is not, `ridePosition` stands in — fired at t = 30.5, through the deck at t = 37.6, onto the target at t = 40.0, the same three numbers. - `ease` is `linear` wherever the move has a stated speed (the shot-12 aerial at 14 m/s) and eased everywhere the move is an operator's.
