What it does

Scene-depth volumetric clouds

Reuses Zero's v5 Perlin-Worley density generation and multi-scatter lighting. Converts density to a storage buffer because render-feature passes do not accept 3D textures. Marches at 90% viewport resolution against the active camera and opaque depth, after atmosphere and before lens effects. The 220–3300 m cloud layer drifts in world space, with two procedural erosion octaves for nearby detail. Uses up to 128 adaptive steps, increasing stride with distance and empty-space skipping. The environment module owns its lifetime.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

conforms to

zero/source-extract/v2

Reuses the built-in Perlin-Worley volume and multi-scatter lighting. Integrates against the camera and opaque depth of EACH render target.

# Sortie state and lifecycle Shared per-client game state, constants, system registration, ordered update/reset callbacks, UI callback routing, damage, mission outcomes and bounded sound/event history for SKYWARD. The scene entrypoint loads flight, combat, cockpit and environment modules and drives this registry.

# Aircraft cloud density probe Samples the same packed Perlin-Worley volume and mirrored world coordinates as the cloud renderer, at the pilot's position. The render feature reads one float asynchronously about three times per second. Missions use sustained dense cover to break hostile seeker tracking; combat prevents player seeker acquisition in the same cover. No altitude-only approximation or full-volume CPU readback.

# Cloud density transfer Transfers the built-in 256×128×256 cloud density texture into a 32 MiB scalar storage buffer for the depthClouds render feature. Kept entirely on the GPU. The tile ordering preserves adjacent X/Z samples for trilinear interpolation.

# Cloud composite Blends the depth-clipped cloud radiance over the scene. The depthClouds render feature supplies the cloud image as the pass source. A full-resolution near-depth test keeps canopy and instrument edges clear when the cloud image is rendered below viewport resolution.

# Depth-clipped cloud ray marcher Adapted from the installed builtin v5 volumetric cloud shader. Uses current per-target inverse view projection and opaque scene depth to stop integration at geometry, including water, cockpit and aircraft. Samples a world-anchored density buffer with trilinear interpolation and wind drift; outputs premultiplied cloud scatter and opacity. Consumed by depthClouds.
