What it does

ridge

Saddle 3400 — the place Fire For Effect happens on. The snow col the battery is dug into, its two rock horns, the cloud deck 140 m below that fills the valley and reads as ground, the pour that comes over the col's west lip, the emplacements, the ammunition dump, the spotting mast, and the valley floor at y = -900 with the scree fan the rounds land on.

Serves shots 1, 2, 8, 12, 14 and 16, and the ground under 6 and 7.

Exports

  • M.build(root) — called by FilmDirector. Re-entrant: every piece asks the world whether its entities are still there rather than trusting a flag, and everything it makes is marked temporary, because all of it is rebuilt on the next load and none of it belongs in the saved scene.
  • M.tick(t, dt) — film seconds, fixed 1/24. Also pumps the massif and the deck a few patches a frame until they stand.
  • M.reset() — on Film.restart().
  • M.groundHeightAt(x, z) -> y — the snow's world height at a point. Anything that stands on the saddle asks this rather than guessing.
  • M.valleyHeightAt(x, z) -> y — the same for the floor under the deck.
  • M.deck — the tearing surface ordnance drives: tear(i, x, z, radius, heat), setHoles({ {x, z, radius, heat}, ... }), close(i), holes(), setUnderglow(v). Up to deck.MAX_HOLES = 8.
  • M.setUnderfire(v) — how much fire the cloud is catching from below; drives the pour and the deck's general orange wash together.
  • M.setSoot(v) — force the snow's soot instead of letting it ride Film.ruin.
  • M.mast() / M.dump() — the spotting mast and the ammunition dump, by ref.
  • M.ground / M.pour / M.works — the submodules, for anything finer.

Usage

local Ridge = require("ffe.ridge")
Ridge.deck.tear(1, -1750, 120, 90, 1.4)   -- open a hole in the sky-floor
Ridge.setUnderfire(0.8) -- and light the cloud from under it
local y = Ridge.groundHeightAt(-4, -22.5) -- where the snow is under Gun One

Notes

  • Everything this slice owns also stands on a ridge render layer beside default, so capture { renderLayers = "ridge sky" } shows the place on its own while three other agents fire effects through the same frame.
  • The massif is one height function sampled into meshes. It is meshed a few patches a frame from tick, not from a spawned task: a task started inside a component's update is bound to that call's script context and is cancelled when the call returns.
  • The deck's churn rides the ENGINE clock (uniforms.time) because a vertex stage cannot read per-instance data; everything else in the slice — the pour, the plumes, the tarp, the mast, the racks — is a pure function of film time.

ffe.ridge — SLICE: the place. Saddle 3400. The snow col the battery is dug into, its two rock horns, the cloud deck 140 m below that fills the valley and reads as ground, the pour that comes over the col's west lip, the emplacements the guns stand in, the ammunition dump, the spotting mast, the valley floor at y = -900 and the scree fan the rounds land on. Shots served: 1, 2, 8, 12, 14, 16 — and the ground under 6 and 7. The slice is four modules under /zero/source/ffe/ridge/, each owning one thing and each re-entrant: ffe.ridge.ground the massif, as one height function sampled into meshes. `Ground.heightAt(x, z)` is the answer to "where is the snow" for everyone. ffe.ridge.deck the cloud deck: 76 tiles of one continuous displaced field. THE TEARING SURFACE `ordnance` drives — see `Ridge.deck`. ffe.ridge.pour the deck overtopping the west lip, as bodies of cloud that climb, crest and slide onto the col. ffe.ridge.works the emplacements, the matting, the ammunition dump and its racks, and the spotting mast. WHAT THE OTHER SLICES CALL Ridge.groundHeightAt(x, z) -> y the snow's world height at a point Ridge.deck.tear(i, x, z, r, heat) open one hole in the deck Ridge.deck.setHoles({...}) set the whole hole set at once Ridge.deck.close(i) / .holes() take one back out / read them back Ridge.setUnderfire(v) how much fire the cloud is catching Ridge.setSoot(v) force the snow's soot past Film.ruin Ridge.mast() / Ridge.dump() the spotting mast and the dump, by ref

# ridge.works The fieldworks: a horseshoe of frozen sandbags around each gun, steel matting laid over the snow, an ammunition dump behind the line with its racks and its lashed tarpaulin, and a spotting mast on the north side. All of it moves, because the shots it serves say so — wind streaming snow off the sandbags and a loose tarp corner snapping (shot 2), the mast slewing onto the correction (shot 8), and the last rounds leaving the racks on their own with a tarp corner burning (shot 14). ## Exports - `Works.build(root)` — placement is find-or-spawn all the way down, so it runs whole every time and the works re-seat themselves on the snow after a terrain rebuild instead of hanging where the old ground was. - `Works.tick(t, dt)`. - `Works.setBurn(v)` — how hard the tarp corner is burning. - `Works.mast()` / `Works.dump()`. ## Notes - The tarpaulin is real cloth: a strip mesh whose positions AND normals are rewritten every frame from three travelling waves plus a gust envelope. A runtime mesh has no CPU-resident copy, so `renderer.mesh.setVertices` cannot reach it — `renderer.mesh.update(handle, geometry)` is the call.

# ridge.ground Saddle 3400's massif, as ONE height function sampled into meshes: a col at y = 0 carved west-to-east through a mountain body, shoulders north and south, two rock horns standing out of the cloud at the col's west end, every flank plunging below the deck so the ground never shows an edge, and under the deck the valley floor at y = -900 with its scree fan. ## Exports - `Ground.heightAt(x, z) -> y` — the snow's world height. The answer to "where is the ground" for every other slice; nothing in it reads a clock, so it is the same in every mode and on every run. - `Ground.valleyHeightAt(x, z) -> y` — the floor under the deck. - `Ground.build(root)` / `Ground.pump(n)` / `Ground.isBuilt()` / `Ground.progress()` — the meshing, a few patches a frame. - `Ground.patchGeometry(H, x0, z0, step, nx, nz, skirt?)` — a rectangular patch of any height function, with normals taken from the function itself rather than from the grid, so two patches of different density share a border exactly. ## Notes - Relief belongs to the mountain BODY and to the horns, and `col` cuts a clean channel through whatever they leave standing. Adding relief after the cut lifts the col's west ramp and walls the saddle into a closed bowl, and the cloud deck then has nowhere to show. - Each gun stands on a levelled pad, because `Film.gunPosition` puts its trails at exactly y = 0.

# ridge.pour The deck overtopping the saddle's west lip. Standing 1.4 m above a col with a cloud floor 140 m below it you cannot see that floor near you — the lip cuts it off and the deck only reappears kilometres out as a band under the horizon. What actually fills shot 1's frame with cloud is what the shot list says fills it: the pour. A standing cascade climbing the west flank out of the deck, and over the lip a train of rolls that rise, crest, slide onto the col and die. ## Exports - `Pour.build(root)` — 44 bodies of cloud on one shared ellipsoid mesh. - `Pour.tick(t, dt)` — every roll's position, scale, spin and opacity as a pure function of film time. - `Pour.setUnderfire(v)` — how much fire the cloud is catching from below. - `Pour.count()`. ## Notes - The alpha is a function of the INTERPOLATED normal, so a coarse sphere reads as a fluted drum rather than as a body of powder. 34x20 is enough.

# ridge.deck The cloud deck: the white floor at y = -140 that fills the valley from horizon to horizon and reads as ground. 76 tiles of five sizes carrying ONE continuous displaced field, so the deck under the camera is metres-fine and the deck at the horizon is cheap. This is the surface `ordnance` tears. ## Exports - `Deck.build(root)` / `Deck.pump(n)` / `Deck.isBuilt()` — build a handful of tiles a frame. - `Deck.tear(i, x, z, radius, heat)` — open one hole, `i` in 1..`MAX_HOLES`. - `Deck.setHoles(list)` — set the whole set at once; each record is `{ x, z, radius, heat }` or `{ x, z, radius, heat }` positionally. - `Deck.close(i)` / `Deck.holes()` — take one out / read them back. - `Deck.setUnderglow(v)` — a wash of orange across the whole deck. - `Deck.tick(t, dt)` — pushes film time, `Film.ruin` and each tile's three nearest holes onto its instance-data lanes. ## Notes - Every tile mesh carries WORLD xz and its entity stands at `(0, DECK_Y, 0)`, so object space IS world space and the field runs across all 76 tiles with no seam. - A tile's skirt is sized to the crack it exists to hide — about three quarters of its own cell. A fixed skirt deep enough for the coarsest ring is a wall standing at every tile edge, invisible from above and the whole picture from a camera at the deck's own level. - The material blends as `cutout` with `cull: none`: the cutout is what makes a hole a hole, and no culling is what lets shot 7 see the deck's underside.
