What it does

Story

The story slice of Banana 2077. The scene entrypoint attaches it to the mount_story entity in play; nothing else attaches it.

What it does:

  • Cast in the city. It builds a procedural fruit NPC (from game.story.cast) for every R.cast member except V and Johnny. Each NPC goes to its home spot, checked with a ground raycast, and is published with R.setCastPosition. Rigs are built lazily, one per frame, the first time V comes near. They are hidden beyond cullDistance (checked at 3 Hz). Within 25 m they breathe and sway at 15 Hz, and within 6 m they turn to face V. When a romance date moves an NPC, the move waits until V is more than 30 m away so nobody teleports on screen.

  • Interaction for every slice. Each NPC is registered as a TALK interactable (npc_<id>). At 8 Hz the component shows a prompt for R.nearestInteractable, whoever registered it: [F] TALK | JUDY BLUEBERRY, with [RB] after gamepad input. On touch it shows a contextual button labelled with the verb. F, gamepad RB, a tap on the touch button or a click on the prompt calls R.interact.

  • Visual-novel dialogue. On dialogueRequested it draws letterbox bars, a bottom text box, the speaker's portrait, a name plate in the cast colour and a mood chip, typewriter text (about 20 Hz, one label) and up to 4 choices with [ATTR N] tags. A choice is locked when its check or requires fails. Controls:

    • keyboard: 1-4, arrows or W/S, Enter/Space/F, Esc
    • gamepad: dpad, south to confirm, east to close
    • mouse and touch: click or tap
    • platform Back closes it

It runs node and choice run functions, ends with R.endDialogue, and releases the mouse pointer while open.

  • Johnny Silverpeel. On johnnySays it shows a glitchy magenta/cyan RGB-split overlay line. The component makes Johnny react to:

    • the first visit to each place
    • level-ups
    • flatlining
    • boss kills
    • low health
    • the first quickhack

Ordinary lines are limited to one every 30 s. Story beats skip that limit but wait for the dialogue to close.

  • Talk providers. It installs the priority-0 chatter (game.story.talk: affection, gifts, attribute checks) and the priority-60 romance arcs (game.story.romance).

Needs:

  • the modules game.rules, game.story.cast, game.story.talk and game.story.romance
  • the input maps game.story.dialogue and game.story.story
  • the portrait textures in game.story.art

It uses UI layers 140–148 only. onDestroy removes every subscription, input binding, screen, interactable and NPC entity it made, so a hot reload or a reset never doubles anything.

# game.story.romance The four romance arcs of Banana 2077, owned by the story slice. The Story component calls `Romance.install()` in `start()` and runs the returned unsubscribes in `onDestroy()`. | NPC | quest | date spot | |---|---|---| | Judy Blueberry | `romance_judy` "Pixel Perfect" | The Banana Split, by the stage (13, 72) | | Panam Pomelo | `romance_panam` "Crane Game" | under the north docks crane (160.5, 45) | | River Radish | `romance_river` "Koi, Interrupted" | the Peel Park koi pond (-159.1, -155.9) | | Kerry Kiwi | `romance_kerry` "Unplugged" | the Skyline Promenade overlook (70, 147) | - Each quest (kind `romance`) has three stages: `invite` → `date` → `official`. Every stage's waypoint is `{npc = id}`, so it follows the NPC. - **Unlock:** when affection reaches 40 (the `affection` event, `profileLoaded`, or install) and V has no romance yet, the quest starts and "<NAME> WANTS TO SEE YOU" is notified. - **Talk provider at priority 60.** It sits above the quests slice's idle lines, but yields while one of the NPC's own gigs is active. It returns nil when there is nothing romantic to say. - `invite` is the invitation. Accepting moves the quest to `date`, and the NPC walks off to the date spot (`Romance.placeOf(id)`). - `date` is a VN date scene with affection choices (each counted once, ever) and a `[COOL]` or `[INTELLIGENCE]` check. Finishing it sets the flag `romance_<id>_dated` and moves the quest to `official`. Leaving with Esc lets V replay the date. - `official`, at affection 80, offers "make it official" (requires `R.romance() == nil`). That calls `R.setRomance(id)` and completes the quest. - Declining the invite or "not yet" snoozes the provider for 150 s. - **Only one romance:** the `romance` event fails the other active arcs. Their chatter in `game.story.talk` reacts. - **API:** `Romance.ARCS`, `Romance.IDS` and `Romance.placeOf(id)` → `{x, z, yaw?}` while the date stage is on, else nil.

# game.rules Banana 2077's one shared module: palette, the Peel Kabuki street layout every slice builds to, tuning for the player, baton and enemies, the controls list, the live game state (`R.state`, kept across hot reloads), the event bus (`R.on` / `R.emit`) and the rule functions that change state (`damagePlayer`, `healPlayer`, `addEddies`, `setSunglasses`, `registerTarget`, `hit`, `reportKill`, `setPhase`, `startRun`). Required by every slice; owned by the lead. See `/zero/source/design/spec.md`.

# story.inputMap Banana 2077's interact controls, owned by the story slice and live while a run is playing. - `interact` — F / gamepad RB (right shoulder). Calls `R.interact(id)` on the nearest interactable. - `talk`, `shop`, `hack`, `open`, `scan`, `pickup`, `use` — touch-only buttons (zone right-upper, priority 34), one per interactable verb. The Story component subscribes to exactly one of them at a time — the one matching the nearest interactable's verb (`use` for any other verb) — so the touch overlay draws a single contextual button labelled with what V can do right now, and none when nothing is in reach.

# dialogue.inputMap Conversation controls, activated by the `Story` component while a VN dialogue is open and deactivated when it closes. - `confirm` — Enter / Space / F / gamepad south (A): finish the typewriter line, then advance or pick the highlighted choice. - `up` / `down` — arrows, W / S, D-pad: move the choice highlight. - `choice1`..`choice4` — number keys 1-4 pick a choice directly. - `close` — Esc / gamepad east (B): leave the conversation. Touch has no buttons here (`touch = {}`): the box and every choice are tappable, and the box carries a ✕.

# game.story.talk The cast's everyday chatter in Banana 2077: the **priority-0 talk provider** each cast member falls back to when no quest (priority 50), romance (20) or shop (10) provider has anything to say. - `T.install()` registers `R.addTalkProvider(id, 0, fn)` for all eleven cast members and returns the unsubscribe functions. The Story component calls it in `start()` and runs the unsubscribes in `onDestroy()`. - `T.script(npc)` builds a fresh VN script (`{id, start, nodes}`) for one NPC. It returns `nil` for anyone it has no lines for. - `T.CHATTY` lists jackie, judy, panam, river, kerry and dex. Each one has an affection-tiered greeting, a hub of topics (two unseen topics at a time, rotated), `[ATTR N]` check choices and a **Give a gift** branch. The gift branch lists `R.inventory("gift")` and reacts by `R.giftValue` (loved, liked or meh). - Every topic moves affection once, ever (flag `story_aff_<npc>_<topic>`). Kind answers add +2 to +5 and rude ones take away 3. - The romanced NPC gets partner lines. The other romanceables react once to V's choice (flag `story_react_<npc>_<partner>`). - `T.VENDORS` lists nana, kumquat, hiro, misty and byte. Each gets a single rotating line, since the shops slice adds "Browse wares" at priority 10.

# game.story.cast The procedural fruit cast of Banana 2077: Jackie Watermelon, Judy Blueberry, Panam Pomelo, River Radish, Kerry Kiwi, Dex DeCoconut and the five vendors (Noodle Nana, Doc Kumquat, Hiro Durian, Misty Mango, Byte Banana). `Cast.build(id, parentEntity, name?)` builds one character rig out of shared part meshes and the story/enemy materials, returning `root` (ground pivot, +Z forward), `body` (hip pivot), `armL`/`armR`, `legL`/`legR` and `comps` (its Model components, for culling). `Cast.SPECS[id]` holds each rig's proportions and `Cast.IDS` lists every buildable id. Called by `game.story.Story` (the NPCs you talk to) and the shops slice (vendors behind their counters).
