What it does

staging.attract

The art the opening is made of. Ten painted pixel canvases and the placement rules for them; the timeline that drives them lives in emberline.staging.director, so the opening can be recut without touching a pixel.

SheetWhat it is
skythe smog, its sodium bloom, drifting soot, a cold moon
farthe Kessai skyline: towers, chimneys, lit windows, beacons, the flooded waterline
midthe viaduct — arches, deck, rail, signal gantries, lamps, rain
nearthe platform edge, railing, a close sodium lamp, cables, heavy rain
trainthe Emberline crossing, lit carriages and a firebox
emberthe Ember itself, eight frames of pulse
titlethe EMBERLINE logotype and its subtitle
rosterMAG, KITE and BELL, revealed one per frame
wardenthe Warden, eight frames of lantern swing
typethe opening's writing, one frame per line

Placement

The opening is a curtain, not a stage: its layers sit between the fighters (z = 0) and the camera (z = 14), in front of everything the fight puts on screen, because an attract sequence has to read as one place whatever is standing behind it. The depths keep their order, so the parallax still separates them — Attract.parallax(camX) moves each painted layer by camX * (1 - p) with the factors from Rules.LAYERS.parallax.

Cards are type, so they hold their share of the screen whatever the camera is doing: Attract.pin(key, camX, camY, camHeight) scales and places them against the live framing. A card left at world scale grows out of frame the moment a beat pushes in.

Building

beginBuild() then buildStep() until it returns true draws one canvas per call, so the cost can be spread over frames; buildAll() does the lot at once. Everything lands under a temporary parent, so none of it is saved into the scene. teardown() removes it.

show(key, frame, x, y, z) / hide(key) / hideAll() / frame(key, n) / move(key, x, y, z) are what the timeline drives. Omit z and the sheet takes its resting depth from Attract.LAYOUT.

Interface

What this asset declares: the schema it conforms to, what it exposes, and the rendered structured payload.

zero/source-extract/v2

emberline.staging.attract — the art the opening is made of. Six painted canvases and a type card. The sequence that drives them lives in emberline.staging.director; this module only knows how to BUILD them and where they sit, so the timeline can be rewritten without touching a pixel. Everything is painted at 320x180 (or smaller for the props) and scaled so a backdrop covers the 7.82 x 4.4 world units the fight camera shows, with margin for the camera's pans. Layers sit at the depths in Rules.LAYERS and are shifted by hand against camera x — an orthographic projection gives no parallax for free, so the separation between the smog, the skyline, the viaduct and the platform edge is arithmetic, not perspective.

# staging.glyphs The arcade display face. Every word the staging slice puts on screen is drawn INTO a pixel canvas rather than laid out by the UI system, because an attract card is art: it lives in world space behind and in front of the camera moves, and it has to survive the same nearest-neighbour sampling everything else in this game does. A glyph is 5 wide and 7 tall, drawn at an integer scale so a letter is always a whole number of sheet pixels. Uppercase, digits, and the punctuation the opening needs. ```lua local Glyphs = require("emberline.staging.glyphs") Glyphs.write(K, "ROUND ONE", 240, 60, { scale = 6, align = "center", fit = 290, color = "paper", outline = "ink", outlineWidth = 2, shadow = 3, }) ``` - `write(K, text, x, y, opts) -> width` — `x, y` is the line's left edge and bottom row unless `align` is `"center"` / `"right"`. - `measure(text, scale, tracking) -> width` — for laying a line out yourself. - `block(K, lines, cx, y, opts)` — several centred lines. `opts.fit` is a width the line must not exceed; the scale steps down until it does. Pass it on any card whose copy can change — a line that runs off the sheet is cropped by the canvas, not wrapped. `opts.outlineWidth` and `opts.shadow` are in SHEET pixels, never in glyph scales. An outline that scales with the type closes the counters and the gaps between letters, and a headline turns into a black slab with some lighter shapes cut out of it. `opts.gradient = { bottomColor, topColor }` fills the top three rows of every glyph with the second colour — enough to make a logotype read as lit.
