A deadlight is the hinged steel cover bolted over a porthole to keep the sea out. It is also what sailors call the dark.
Three thousand eight hundred metres under the North Atlantic, a crewed submersible drops onto the bow of a liner that has been on the bottom for a century. The film is one dive: the last blue light under the surface, the black midwater, the seafloor arriving out of nothing, the bow coming up out of the dark, a traverse down the port side past the anchor and the forecastle and one open porthole, and a debris field of ordinary things. Nobody speaks, nothing is recovered — the manipulator arm reaches for a porcelain cup and does not take it — and the last shot is the sub climbing away as its lamps come off the plating and the ship goes back into the dark it was found in.
Fourteen shots, 96 seconds, three movements, on a fixed 1/24 s film clock. deadlight.film holds the timing spine and the world contract; FilmDirector advances it exactly one step per rendered frame and places the camera, so the same 2,304 frames come out the same way every time.
Three things invert across the film, and they are the whole design. The light source goes from the sun, above and natural, to one lamp beside the subject and then receding. The water goes from clear cobalt to twenty-five metres of reach. And the frame goes empty, to occupied, to empty again — a different emptiness.
Built entirely in the engine. The ship is one lofted shell plated strake by strake with real in-and-out laps, a raked forged stem, a cambered weather deck, the port anchor standing in its hawse, a windlass and thirty-four metres of studless chain faked on deck, three rows of portholes a side phased so one lands on the hero deadlight, and sixty rusticle clumps that sway on the film clock. Five tiling textures are generated pixel by pixel at build time. The water is a per-channel Beer-Lambert pass measured through each frame's own inverse view-projection. The seafloor is a 128,800-triangle plain whose ripple sets, nodules, drag trails and silt grain are all shaded per pixel from world XZ. Eleven GPU emitters carry the marine snow, the lamp cones, the thruster wash, the ballast, the silt and the amphipods. Thirteen sound clips are synthesised from a deterministic LCG and mixed against film time through an AudioListener on the camera.
